On a trip to Austria last autumn, I was about take a photo of the friend I was traveling with when were were just about to leave O'Hare. I turned on the camera and then noticed the flashing message:

NO CF CARD!!

I had forgetten the card! I ended up finding one for what I thought was cheap at one of ths stores in Heathrow. I didn't realize the POUND:USD exchange rate was so bad!

Check your cameras before you leave!

256mb CompactFlash RAM $9 after rebate

eCost.com
Until May 31, 2005

Yes, ecost consistenly has the lots of cheap name-brand memory cards. Easiest to find them in the "Bargain Countdown" page. However, keep in mind that even if you qualify for free shipping, you still need to pay about $3.75 for handling.

And if you're not buying enough to qualify for free shipping, get one (or more) of the "free items" like DVD-R, photo papers, etc... They are free after rebate.

When all else fails, there's always Costco.

rex_skidmore Jun 8th, 2005 10:12 AM

costco's prices on memory do not fluctuate daily, as do the major retailers who specialize in such things. Skip Costco for this purchase.

I just got a 2GB CF card on Newegg for $122 after rebate. That's about the cost of two 1GB cards, with the advantage that I can keep shooting longer.

TripleSecDelay Jun 8th, 2005 02:07 PM

Was it SanDisk or Lexar?
Assuming it is the Ultra fast type, that sounds like a good price.

I avoid the no-name brands like Corsair, etc.

sunny16 Jun 9th, 2005 06:39 AM

It's Kingston, another good brand. I already have a 1GB Kingston card that works fine for me. This new card is the Kingston Elite Pro 2GB Compact Flash card. User reviews on Newegg say it's very fast.

Shop CompUSA and Office Max/Depot on their Sunday flyer sales. Big rebates.

Robespierre Jun 9th, 2005 09:17 AM

Also BestBuy. But it has been my experience that Goods + Tax - Rebate is always more than Goods + Shipping - Rebate.

Especially where Shipping = 0. :o)

TripleSecDelay Jun 9th, 2005 11:36 AM

Not wild about Kingston, either.

Reviews of failures exist for all brands, but are far less for Lexar and SanDisk.

Camera memory is one place where low price is not my primary consideration.

Robespierre Jun 9th, 2005 01:25 PM

Funny. I googled kingston compactflash problems and didn't find a single failure report. This finding parallels my own experience with Kingston - dozens of desktop, laptop, PocketPC and camera memories over 15 years with no failures.

dsm22 Jun 9th, 2005 05:33 PM

I have not looked on line, but in the stores around me the cheapest I could find a 1G card was $99.

I have not seen anywhere that offers rebates either.

Robespierre, have you delt with this company before?? Just curious if you have been happy with the things that you have purchased. I had no idea that there were memory cards being sold for such a low price.

Robespierre Jun 9th, 2005 05:46 PM

I have bought probably 3-4gb of SD, XD, and CF memory from Fry's and eCost. No complaints.

TripleSecDelay Jun 9th, 2005 06:08 PM

pierre - It was not my suggestion to Google using those terms. I'm not surprised that you weren't able to find what you were seeking.

Ask many serious photographers which brand of CF and SD cards they use. Let them be your source of guidance.

HINT : Serious photographers are found in greater concentration on photography sites, not necessarily on this one.

dsm22 Jun 9th, 2005 06:08 PM

Thanks for the prompt reply. I think I will have to look into this. I am worried that when I go to Europe next year I won't have enough memory. I took about 500 pictures last year.

I will be moving constantly and I don't think I will be able to stop in a photo place and have them put on a cd.

If I could get a card at such a reasonable price that would solve my dilemma.

Thank you.

Robespierre Jun 9th, 2005 06:19 PM

I think I'll rely on the electronics community. Photographers don't have the right credentials for me.
