thanks everybody for your suggestions. my husband decided on the panasonic lumix dmc with the 20X zoom, ordered from amazon. it arrived today and he was really very pleased with it. he took lots of pictures today of the sunset from our backyard. he's practicing with it. i will be taking my super handy coolpix.
i plan to post pictures taken from both cameras when we return next month.

If it was one of their ZS series that he's bought, then congratulations - pocket-sized miracles....
After three years as a constant companion, my ZS3 has notched up almost 14,000 exposures now, many of which are on:

... and several restaurants and hotels here on Ischia have large prints from its predecessor, the TZ5, hanging on their walls!
One thing though... as you may have noticed, the battery in these P&Ses does a lot more "work" than that of a DSLR, and he'll probably want / need a spare, or even two?
With zooming and an occasional flash, I find that each is good for 200-230 pictures before exhaustion (somewhat less however when brand new, until fully 'conditioned').
Rather expensive over here, and maybe not so easily found... from Amazon Italy, "real" Panasonic ones are €36 - on the US site, $33.
Hope you'll both now have a better holiday!

Brit, we bought the ZS20 model. also bought the carrying case to wear in hubby's belt. we didnt buy an extra charger, he'll re-charge every night when we return to our hotel. 200 pics is plenty pictures. he's probably in the 100-150 pictures a day, based on our previous trips.
i showed him the post yesterday in the Spain forum (i posted a comment on it so you can also click on my name to view it)on someone in this forum who lost passport and computer from a thief in Barcelona). we both feel better about the decision to bring a small, portable camera. the lugging and carrying the big camera backpack is secondary issue to safety for us. i know, i know.... we're not being paranoid, just one to eliminate one possibility where we can be a victim or a target.

Great choice - I've got close to ordering one myself, several times... but if your husband has even half the pleasure I've had from my ZS3, you'll have a very happy man on your hands!
With no RAW (instead a very simple system for 3 shot exposure-bracketing) and easy panorama-shooting, he may well find his click count somewhat higher than before... who knows?
As far as loss and theft goes, I've always relied on decent travel insurance to replace the kit - but have stuck to using fairly small memory cards, rather than risk losing the many thousands of pictures that can be accommodated on those of 16 or 32GB in the same fell stroke!
Great job you've done... how about resolving the Euro's problems next?
