Cambridge, Bath, York ???
Hello,
I am going to London for a week next month. I would like to visit the countryside and maybe stay overnight. Any suggestions?
|
Holly -
Cambridge, Bath, and York are all great daytrips outside of London. They are all very different experiences. Cambridge is a university town so it will be very different from Bath and York. Bath has beautiful architecture and the Roman bath's (and Stonehedge is nearby, if you have a car, and very interesting to see as well). York is a fantastic walled medieval city that is one of my favorite places to visit in the UK. It depends how much time you have, but I would recommend all three if you can do it. (York and Bath require a full day. Cambridge is about 1/2 day to visit.) Good luck.

Didn't get to visit Cambridge or Bath, but York is now my absolute favorite place EVER!
We only have about 1.5 days and it was pretty short...stayed at Four Seasons Hotel (a B&B actually)-which was GREAT!
Their site is:
http://www.fourseasons-hotel.co.uk/
HAve a WONDERFUL time.

Thanks for the tips! Were you traveling by train or did you rent a car?

For only a week visit I would not bother staying overnight outside of London, too much hassle dragging luggage around. You can do a day trip to York very easily (I have). Take train from Kings Cross Sta. The station in York is very close to the center of tourist activities so you can walk once there. (Also close to the river if you want to take a cruise). You can order tickets ahead of time, they are called daypex fares and they are cheaper then getting them while in London, also your seats are reserved. Check www.trainline.com for info.

Other day trips that are really simple are Canterbury (great place, great cathedral, Bath, Oxford, Cambridge etc.

Have fun

spent a week in london last year... i did a day-trip to Bath, taking the train (@1hr30min). Spent the day wondering around, then was back in london by evening - fantastic!

oops! i meant wandering around... although i did wonder, also!

Hi, we spent a week in York a few years ago, and didn't need public transport once. Went to 3 different tings every day, there's loads to do. It's about 2 hours from London on the train. Bath and Cambridge, nice though they are, can't hold a candle to York. A great place.
