Calling USA 1-800 numbers from Europe

Can I make US 1-800 calls from the Europe? Are they still toll free calls or just another expensive international toll calls?

800 numbers definitely do not work from Europe. You can use one of the US phone company's access numbers which will get you a US line connection, at which point you are paying a premium US rate, but not the (often extortionist) European long distance rate. Check with your carrier about how to access their US service from phones abroad. Be advised though that 800 numbers will be charged the long distance full rate when placed from overseas. Often there is a call initiation fee followed by a high per minute charge.

I have had no problem calling my office 800 # from
Germany or Austria, I use the MCI access code for the country and pay a small (less than a dollar) fee for the connection. I have not tried from other countries but assume it would be the same.
