What about the Black Forest region in Germany? You could cross over to the Alsace region of France easily. The baths at Baden Baden are a nice experience although they can't compare with a Turkish bath. The region has good wine, good food, and (I'd guess) a lot of charm and ambience around Christmas with all the markets. My aunt and uncle spent the week of Christmas in Salzburg/Garmisch a couple years ago and had a very nice time there, so that might be something to consider as well.

If you do bring Muffy along, do tell her to be a good girl... although personally, I bet Santa would be too chicken to put a lump of coal in HER stocking!

Amsterdam?

The week between Christmas and new Year's is said to be the busiest of any week of the year in Amsterdam - and the place is one big festive feeling leading up to the usual fireworks on NY Eve

Hotels are impossible to get but a really festive time

Texasaggie, I have been to both Salzburg and Garmisch. In fact, I was there with my mother so that wouldn't be a good idea because it would bring up painful memories. Thanks for the advice, however.

I would not like Amsterdam.

Just answeed this on another thread - we are going to see Father Christmas - Tromso in Norway - it has scenery, skiing, ocas, whales, the northern lights and is the Ibiza of the north! What else do you want for Christmas - the flights are cheap from the UK as well.

Oh, right, Ibiza at 14F in December. Sounds like fun, sweetie darling. I am also sure they have a Prada on Svenigndottermonigsrottska Street.

Could you see me on a whale-watch boat with a martini and Lanvin cashmere scarf?

LOL, Thin...somehow I cannot see you being anywhere the others wouldn't recognize it as Lanvin OR cashmere.

Go to Berlin!

Oh, please, Dukey, like I would even consider going dog sledding in the Arctic. I would turn those poor dogs into a coat.

I wonder if anybody had ever spent a Christmas in Albania. Marginal, wanna be the first one?

Have you been to Odessa? That's a fun place. Or Kishinev. Or Sochi - oversee their Olympics preparation

Cruise? There must be special Christmas cruises. Sea or river.

How about Tangier? If it was good enough for Paul Bowles, I'm sure it would please you.

Alternatively, you could go to Cuernavaca and play Robert Brady.

IMO Friedrichstrasse is the ideal location - stayed on or very near to there on both of my trips to Berlin & will do so in future.

Siberia. Yes, I know, but you would definitely have a place to show off the cashmere scarf, and LOTS of people to share a vodka martini with you...

And if you've been there, you most surely haven't been there in December, no?

Seriously, I'd go for Berlin, as you have no plans for Manhattan.

They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin
I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

(thanks to L.Cohen)
