Calling for itinerary ideas for Italy August 2012
Hi, all,
I would like to get some itinerary advice for Rome and Italy. My fiancé and I are going on our honeymoon this August. Yes, I know that this is not the best time to go. Our tickets have been purchased and we will have a great time!
In short, what do you all recommend we do? We have about two weeks.
Here are a few things that we would like to do:
--Visit some Roman ruins
--Eat good food
--Ride our bikes through the countryside
--Speak some Italian with locals
Although August is supposedly the busiest time of the year for tourism, we’d like to avoid huge crowds if possible. Obviously this will be unavoidable as we plan to see the major attractions in Rome. Still, we don’t want to spend our entire trip in crowds, and would like to get off the beaten track a bit and relax.
I imagine the itinerary to look like this:
Days 1-4: Adjust from jet lag, see Vatican, Coliseum, etc. around Rome
Days 5-9 Visit Florence, or some other key city
Days 10-13 Relax a bit in a smaller town, do some bike riding
Days 14-15: Return to Rome, fly back home
Anything thoughts and overall tips would be much appreciated!
Thank you,
Eric and Alicia

First, on your selection of flights - are you stuck with to-from Rome? Teh iteinerary is much easier to manage if you fly into Rome and out of Milan or Venice.
2- It may be hard to fit into other priorities you have, but two nights in Venice is higly recommended. - and an easy trainride to/from Florence.
3 - Vesuvius and Pompei are neat items on the itinerary, but south of Rome, which means hot, so I only mention this to stimulate some ideas - would be a good idea in the later fall.
4 - a great Honeymoon stop for the "relax" bit are the villages of So. Tuscany (easy to get to Rome airport from here) May I recommend La Foce (www.lafoce.com) and/or the towns of Montepulciano, Cortona, or Montalcino.

Eric & Alicia,
I've visited Italy 3 times (not nearly as many visits as lots of Fodorites), but if it were me and a honeymoon -
Arrive Rome and train to one of the Tuscan/Umbrian hilltowns (Orvieto, Montepulciano, Assisi, or Spello) and stay 1 or 2 nights.
Pick up a rental car and go to your countryside lodging of choice - the smaller the better for a honeymoon IMO. If you REALLY want to be off the beaten track, choose an area (like southern Tuscany) and STAY in a town you have NEVER heard of! Then do day trips from there, when and as you choose (or not), for the next 4-5 nights.
Drop off the car in a town outside of Florence, then train in. Spend a day or 1 nt in Florence, then train to Rome. Finish with your nights in Rome.
This would give you a very relaxing start, with a big finish in Rome (hotel with A/C).
Congratulations and buon viaggio!
