calling canada

I have a friend that moved to canada. When I saw my phone bill (28minutes-$21.00) I knew where to come for help! Any suggestions for cheaper rates? Thanks

When I have to call overseas, I use the 101-6868 dialing code (www.pt-1.com/English_Site.html) It only costs 7.9 cents a minute to the UK (same rate applies to Canada.)

My call to confirm our cottage in September was only 57 cents.

But where are you calling from?

J62 May 14th, 2005 08:40 AM

Sounds like you are paying the old AT&T standard residential rates. Do you have a discount long distance plan with anybody?

If you google 'long distance rate comparison' you will come up with numerous web sites that will compare the many companies offering plans. Depending on your calling pattern you can

My long distance carrier is Total Call USA http://www.totalcallusa.com/longdistance/residential/

they have plans for as little as $0.06/min to Canada, with no dial around required (just direct dial from my home phone)

IN Massachusetts, Verizon offers a land line plan for $70/mo including all taxes--actual price is lower--that includes unlimited long distance to all the US and Canada. Perhaps any place in the US that has Verizon service has the same?? But I am guessing that your query, being on the Europe board, indicates that you do not live in the US.

I am sure this is not the cheapest plan but I pay $4.95 to AT&T and can call anywhere in the world for something like 9 or 10 cents a minute. Calling cellphones do cost more however.

WHERE are you calling from? Makes a huge difference.

If from the States - try a 1010 number (different ones work better in different areas). I use 1010-987 but you can google "1010 numbers" and compare rates. I pay 5¢ or less a minute depending on the call.

oops - meant to say I pay <b>7¢</b> or less a minute . . . .

J62 Nov 22nd, 2007 05:15 PM

this is a 2 year old thread. Finexpert topped it in his one and only posting simply for advertising purposes.

check the date - May 2005

janisj Nov 22nd, 2007 05:58 PM

oops - I usually notice things like that. Must be groggy from all the over-eating!

finexpert -- tsk tsk, advertising isn't allowed on here [-X

LoveItaly Nov 22nd, 2007 06:55 PM

OOOOPS is right janisj, I didn't notice either. I was the first dunce, lol

Thanks for the heads up J62.

Finexpert, why would one want to do business with your company in that you are not savy enough to read the rules that Fodor's has or you do not respect any other company's rules? Not someone I would want to do business with but nice try!!!

Download SKYPE and install it.
All you'll then need is a cheap
headphone/mic and you can talk
computer to computer free.

Hear hear, another vote for Skype, I have been calling my son OS for the last eight months and it hasn't cost me anything - a great invention!

Hi P,

1016868 has instituted a connection fee.

I'm now using 1010987.

Google &quot;Dial around numbers&quot; to compare different operators.

Another yes vote for Skype. I have a friend whose son lives in Canada and they have been using Skype for a year (totally free). The best thing for him is he gets to see his son and grandson via the video.
