Can someone please <BR>advise some of the must see and do things while visiting Dublin. We look forard to hanging out with the locals and enjoying a few pints. Where in Dublin can we find some <BR>good local pubs? We don't like the touristy <BR>things. <BR> <BR>

I left Dublin(reluctantly, of course) 15 years ago. I visit regularly, but am not a native anymore, so I would ask DUBS to add their comments. <BR> <BR>OK .. Being Irish I can say this .... there are NO touristy pubs in Dublin - we take our pubs VERY seriously! (However, If someone offers you a pint coupled with Riverdance .... run!) You must avoid hotel bars with the exception of the Horseshoe Bar in the Shelbourne Hotel which is a "must see" (first stop on the pub crawl - a dry sherry at most). <BR> <BR>The obvious choice, if you are under 60, is Temple Bar - it will be hopping on the 17th and every second establishment is a pub (most will have musicians). I used to love Davy Burns (off Grafton Steeet but has become a bit "fashionable", I think) as will you if you are a Joyce fan, the Brazen Head and Bruxelles. But whatever your choice, you can't go wrong. Most important things to remember are: <BR> <BR>1. Pace yourself (don't try to drink pint for pint with the locals) <BR>2. If you are up for it, consider doing a "pub-crawl" with a group you pick up in a bar, which leads me to .... <BR>3. Strike up a conversation with the locals - it is not difficult - and, biased as I am, I do believe that the Irish are the most entertaining people on the planet and they LOVE talking to visitors <BR> <BR>I really wish I could be there on the 17th!!! I am sooooooo jealous. You will have the BEST time!

Pub crawls can be a difficult thing these days in Dublin, particularly around March 17. We left one pub around 9 p.m., hoping to stop into a few more before the night was over, and althoug we tried at least 15 different places, we could not get into ANY! They were all packed full of people, and the bouncers weren't letting anyone in (this was in Temple Bar). <BR> <BR>We ended up in the dreaded hotel bar. Since then, we've learned to stay put, and to get into the pub early in order to get a table.

I was in Dublin just last month. Temple Bar area is very touristy...it's difficult to come across a local. I can imagine that it will be even worse on St. Paddy's Day. <BR> <BR>I found some fun, local pubs by asking my taxi drivers for their favorite spots in town. <BR> <BR>Have fun! Make sure to try the hard cider.
