Use Skype or Tango via the internet or will you not have a computer with you?

Whether cell phone is not on option because of "cost" depends on the setup. Some come with breathtaking price tag while others come at $0 cost. I think it is a limited way to characterize using a cellphone is Italy.

What is the model of the phone you have and what is your current US carrier and how how many minutes you plan to use and what is the direction of the calls: US->Italy, Italy-> US?

DEPENDING on your answer....
1. Use VOIP app on your smartphone using hotel's WiFi
2. Unlock you phone and buy cheap Italian SIM card
3. Buy a low end phone in Italy with prepaid service
4. Use phone card from your hotel room, etc

I'm no expert on Rome but most internet cafes offer long distance phone services, if you're just talking a few calls. For me when I travel I just get by using email instead.
