Calais to Strasbourg via Luxembourg or Reims?

We are travelling to Lugano in Switzerland by car from Calais and we are considering Metz or Strasbourg as our first stop. Does that sound realistic? Anyone any other suggestions? There are two motorway routes on the map which look to be ok and take about the same time. Is there anyone out there with experience enough to advise us which is best/fastest at this time of year.

There's little difference overall in the two options. From Calais to Metz is 451km, then 520km from Metz to Lugano; total 971km. From Calais to Strasbourg is 606km, Strasbourg to Lugano 390km; total 996. You might want to look at some of the route plotting websites; www.route66.nl/demo/demo.html for one; Shell Oil also has one.

I would expect accommodations to be less expensive in Metz or the surrounding area than in Strasbourg. You might keep that in consideration.
