Caganers

The following is not a joke:

In Catalunya, the part of Spain that includes Barcelona, people give caganers as gifts. The translation is little shi--ers. These figurines are usually public figures. So if you are there for Christmas, this would make a most unusual souvenir or gift.

There is so much to be learned from travel.

I take it you haven't been to Fallas in Valencia... The love to skewer public figures. This is typical throughout Spain, including Cataluyna.

IMDonehere Dec 8th, 2014 07:56 PM

I have not been to Fallas, but Robert have you seen caganers in areas other than Catalunya?

kimhe Dec 9th, 2014 01:42 AM

Fabulous!

latedaytraveler Dec 9th, 2014 03:11 AM

IMD, if I recall these caganers are often included in crèche arrangements.

LateDay

There are a couple buried in the accompanying images.

Robert2533 Dec 9th, 2014 09:13 AM

I've only seen them in Valencia and French Catalunya at Christmas time, where it is a long standing tradition. And yes, they are found in crèches, usually off to the side.

Pvoyageuse Dec 9th, 2014 09:56 AM

They are not a "long standing tradition in French Catalunya". It is only 2 years ago that a Catalan company started to make them specifically for the French market and to export them. Right now there are only 2 shops selling them in Perpignan and the choice is limited. When we want one, we go to Figueres :-)

Robert2533 Dec 9th, 2014 01:29 PM

That's a long way to go for a little caganer!

Micheline Dec 9th, 2014 01:42 PM

I recently saw them on a travel program. I did not realize they also had a little deposit behind them. I'll look for them this June in Valencia.

IMDonehere Dec 9th, 2014 02:24 PM

They are usually harder to find out of season. Unlike other Christmas trinkets, I know of no Caganer Market.

"That's a long way to go for a little caganer!"
A little over half an hour by car !

otherchelebi Dec 9th, 2014 11:08 PM

Spent almost an hour to see if I could find anyone i personally know or have met including IMDonehere among the figurines, to no avail.

Do you know if they will make dolls from photographs we can send them?

IMDonehere Dec 10th, 2014 05:29 AM

For the benefit of the world, my Caganer is not to be found on the page of images. As far as making a doll from the photographs, I think your wife might be concerned on many levels.

More Catalan crap.
