Caen Memorial Museum daytrip from Paris?
I'm thinking of adding a daytrip to Caen just to see the museum, not the D-Day beaches. Is this museum really that great? I've only got four days in Paris, but Caen is only two hours by train which isn't that bad for a daytrip. Is it still worth seeing this museum after seeing the Imperial War Museum and the Churchill museum in London? Which leads me to why I want to go to the Caen museum, because I have been to the War museum in London on a previous trip and really liked it.

We went in March of '11 (me, wife, niece & nephew [college students]) as a part of a d-day 2.5 day trip before Paris. Primarily an add for me and my nephew who are WWII history buffs. Wife and Niece LOVED it. I thoroughly enjoyed the museum myself, and if you're a war museum buff, this one is really good.
P.S. - You'll likely hear from many Fodorites who'll ask why you're leaving Paris with only 4 days! Just remember, it's your trip, and there are no comparable War museums in Paris, IMO.

Londonlover, I just returned from a tour of France which included a visit to the Caen Memorial Museum. Being a WWII history buff, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The presentations/graphics/media clips reminded me of those at the Churchill War Museum in London.
The museum is currently being expanded to include the Cold War and later conflicts in the 20th century. All exhibits are described in French, English, and German.

For a same day return trip, I'd just get a taxi out front of the station. It's about 5 km to the museum, 9 if you take the highway route, which I'd recommend as it is likely faster than driving through the heart of the city - and since most of the city was built post 1945, there's nothing really to see.
