Caddie Gratuity
 

I have a tee time for my wife and I on June 14 at Carnoustie with a caddie for each of us. What is an appropropriate gratuity to offer a caddie. Thanks

I took two friends to Scotland for a golfing holiday - they played among others Carnoustie, Prestwick, the Old Course and Royal Dornoch and had either caddies or bag carriers for each round. I was only w/ them when they tipped one round -- at Carnoustie. One friend gave £10 and his caddie was obviously OK w/ it. The other gave £20 and you'd think he'd been given a fortune.

But this was maybe 5 years ago and expectations may have changed over time. Plus the cost of a round at Carnoustie has gone up quite a bit since then. There is a poster on here (sheila) who will know for sure - hopefully she will see your thread.

In any case, I'd simply discreetly ask the starter before your round what sort of gratuity is standard.

My playing partner says £10; then he says check with teh caddie master; then he says the most he ever paid was £20 and that was at Muirfield- probably the most exclusive club in the country

This spring when my wife and I played the Old Course, . . . the caddie fees were £40 each, to be paid directly to the caddies. We paid £50 each, and both caddies appeared very ok with this. Works out to a 25% gratuity. I did not ask the caddie master or starter (probably should have), . . . but believe a found a source on the net that this was the norm. Sounds like it might be from the above posts.

We played Carnoustie as well, but took bag trollies on that day. Lunch across the street at the Carnoustie Club was very good - and warm. Was a bit of a cool and windy day - like it wasn't hard enough already!
