Cadaques lodging help
I will be staying one night in Cadaques, Spain and I'm looking for a charming hotel for under $100. A balcony would be wonderful, but not necessary. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Kim,
I've not spent the night in Cadaqués, just have done 2 quick day trips, but I searched my Costa Brava file-my Gourmetour (guide published in Spain), plus Penelope Casas (whose recs. I trust), plus an article from Conde Nast Trav. all recommend the 3 star Playa Sol with garden, tennis courts & pool. Don't know about the charm (PCasas isn't too excited about it, but it seems to be the poshest place in town and not a chain). The 49 rms have AC, CNN, balconies, and a single goes for around 18,000 pts. Try
www.publintur.es/playasol.htm (but I just tried & couldn't connect)
A recent N. Geo Traveller article recommends Llané Petit on the far side of the bay (37 rms with balconies but a 10 min walk into town)-simpler, less exp. than P.Sol.
If you'll be there in July/Aug. I'd reserve far, far in advance. Cadaqués is packed to the gills then, and there's a classic music festival in Aug. , so the few hotels in town will fill up quickly.
Hope this gets your thread started.

Try the Hotel Rocamar. I stayed there in October 1997. The weather was a little chilly, but the views are beautiful. You can have a room with either a sea or a mountain view. The rate was 13000pts then. You can try to contact them at 34 72 25 81 50(telephone) or 34 72 25 86 50 (fax). It's possible these phone and fax numbers may be reversed. There's a great little restaurant within walking distance that serves unbelievable escargots that you eat with a very long toothpick. To die for!! Enjoy your trip.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've heard of Playa Sol (in Lonely Planet). I'm going to look into Llane Petit and Hotel Rocamar - they sound a little more my style. Any comments from anyone on these two places or any others?

Kim,
Just read part of George Semler's travelogue "Dream Loup around the Pyrennes..." at www.georgesemler.com. A resident of Catalunya, he's one of the fine writers (along with his daughter, Katherine) of Fodor's Barcelona-Bilbao and also wrote the Rousillon section of Fodor's France plus Barcelona Walks. He recommends the L. Petit and Rocamar.

Kim --
I also would recommend the Rocamar. The interior looks just like you think an old Spanish inn would look like, with vaulted ceilings, red tile floors and roomy rooms. And our room did have a balcony overlooking the Med, with beautiful rocky cliffs. We went in November, 2000, and paid right around $100, although I think the exchange rate with the peseta is more favorable for us now. The hotel has a very good restaurant also.
