BWI Airport
 

How easy is it to get around BWI? I have to get from terminal D to terminal E. How long will it take? Is it walking or tram? What's security like at BWI as far as lines?

I flew into and out of BWI just last month and was amazed by the distance from the gates to the security and check-in areas just within a terminal. Security wasn't bad, but then I was flying at an off-hour.

I am not too familiar with BWI but here are two answers.
I think that D and E are like 50 meters apart. (It is a relatively small airport).
My daughter got to terminal 20 minutes before flight and made it on the plane. At security, she told everyone she was severely late and they let her ahead.

BWI is small and all-walking. One building, no trams and no moving sidewalks. Going from D to E far end to far end is about a 20-minute walk if you're not carrying anything too heavy. Security depends on time of day; my most common experience isn't more than half an hour. They do patrol the lines and will expedite passengers in danger of being late. (I live in Maryland and use this airport a lot.)

I live in DC area and have used BWI a couple times but don't particularly care for it. It's my least favorite airport in the area, although I know some people like it (but I'm not clear on why, maybe because it's smaller). They just seem really unprofessional there and don't know what they are doing, and the airport doesn't have any good shops or restaurants. Last time I was there, the security was okay, about the same as anywhere else, only somehow I always get the feeling that they just hired the people there or they are temps.

One reason "people like it", Christina, is because it is CLOSER to their home than the other two airports.

Lines for security can be long depending on the time of day. There are no trams or moving walkways as someone above has posted. The biggest "problem area" in terms of security lines is usually with Concourse "C" since that's where most of the Southwest Airlines flights are located. Since you'll be avoiding that you probably won't have too much trouble making a connecting flight.
