Buying wine in Italy

I usually post on the cruise forum but this time have a question that I'll bet someone here has the answer to. We have a cruise out of Civitavecchia in oct. The cruise line, Celebrity allows two bottles of wine for use in the cabin. I am really fond of Amarone or a ripasso which is of course Italian so do you think it would be more cost effective to buy it duty free in the airport or wait to get it when we arrive in Rome? We arrive one day early BTW.

Thank you. Larry :-)

I think you might get a better class of wine, more selection and it be less expensive as well in Italy. It would also save the hassle of carrying one more thing with you and the risk of dropping it.

Are the 2 bottles of wine allowed, 2 per person or 1 pp? If you want to carry some home afterwards, bubblewrap is your friend, and stow the wine in the center of your suitcase, with plenty of clothes around it.

You're going to ITALY! For gosh sakes, buy your favorite in Italy. There are many, many reasons--product availability, experience in an enoteca, advice from an italian merchant.
And why would you want to hassle with purchase enroute and handling of it. Get it in Rome--it will give you a focus unless you don't have time.

I didn't know you could even get into duty free shops upon arrival in a country. I thought they were only accessible to departing or transiting passengers. At any rate, buy the wine in Rome. Duty free shops are expensive and have limited selection.

I meant duty free while in O'Hare B4 we go.

The allowance is 2 bottles per cabin, not per person unfortunately.

OK, I'm convinced! Get it in Italy!! :D

Thank you guys. :-) Larry
