That's an important comment - the answer is slightly different depending your home country and your particular arrangements with your own bank and credit card companies.

There are also different scenarios. I know Travelers Checks are not generally accepted, but what if you needed to pay for an apartment stay in cash (more than you can get from your ATM)? Sometimes they might still work OK or be useful as a last resort in an emergency.

travelerjan - Maybe so, but I think SusanP will find limoncello wherever she travels. Click on her screen name and notice how many of her threads refer to limoncello (even a Paris thread). lol

but what if you needed to pay for an apartment stay in cash (more than you can get from your ATM)

I just transferred money using xe.com. The only charge from xe.com was 1.36% to convert the money from US dollars to euro (rates will vary constantly) and the transaction is done via the Internet. So if the renter leaves enough money in an available account, he can then ask for a wire transfer to the landlord's account. That will be done within 48 hours, or was in my case.

We rent apartments often, and most renters don't take credit cards because their "business" is not large enough to qualify with the credit card companies. Some, usually those registered with some kind of locater service, such a VRBO, will take a credit card for the deposit only. Some are starting to use paypal. Many will take a wire transfer, but when I last asked, my bank wanted more than I wanted to pay to do a wire transfer. I'm a little leery of paying the whole amount in advance; I'm more comfortable paying the balance on arrival when I can see if the apartment really has indoor plumbing. So I usually draw cash from an ATM to pay the balance. I've never been unable to get enough cash via ATM, usually by doing multiple transactions. My record is four or five in a row in Russia; the ATM never blinked, but I needed help to carry all the small bills it issued.

xe.com does sound like a good deal. I went through the semi-hassle of opening an account, but haven't yet used it. I'm glad to hear that it works as advertised.

I misspoke: It was an electronic transfer which is different from a wire transfer.

kybourbon, you're right, I can always find Limoncello. In the shop in Rome where I usually get it, I could buy four large bottles!
