Buying train tickets in USA or in ITALY
I am going to be using point to point tickets on the recomendation of Fodorites. Now I am asking a question because I have to be in Florence by 3:00pm. I will be in Venice May12,2008 and leaving on the 15th for Florence. I will loose my reservation by 4:00Pm. Should I buy that one ticket in USA or just take my chances. I can take any train that gets me there before 3:00. Thank you

The only tickets I've ever bought in advance were for a sleeper.
For May you shouldn't have a problem if you buy it a few days ahead.
Venice and Florence aren't too far apart so if one train is full I'm sure there are others.

There are ES* trains about once an hour.
To get to Florence by 3pm, there are direct at 5:43, 6:43, 8:43 and 10:43 from Santa Lucia.
There are also trains from Mestre at 7:47, 9:47 and 11:47 that can bring you to Florence before 3pm. With these, you hop on any train a few minutes earlier from Santa Lucia to get back to the mainland and then switch to the ES*.

Hi J,
If you know which train you want, there is no reason not to buy in advance.
You might even get a discount fare.
It you can't make www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html work for you, buy all of your tickets when you arrive in Venice.
