Buying train tickets-Austria

We'll be taking the train from Salzburg to Vienna on Dec. 27 and from Vienna to Munich on Jan.2

Is there any advantage if we buy our tickets on-line on bahn.de over just buying them when we're in the cities?

In France and Italy there are discounts when you pre-buy, but I don't see any for Austria. Is this the case? This is a holiday period, so will that affect the situation?

Thanks so much.

Hi I,

I would keep checking www.bahn.de to see if they offer discount fares.

don't think you can buy Vienna-Salzburg on DB site.

check austrian rail site: www.oeeb.at and see if discounts - but fare aint' that much to begin with - more on Vienna-Munich perhaps

Thanks for the help. I had checked bahn.de and saw that the fares are the same if I went tomorrow, or early in December. Thanks for the Austria site. I'll check that. I heard that there is a Bavarian family pass for the trip between Munich and Salzburg. Will that work for round trip for that portion, for 2 people.

There are 2 of us, and we fly in and out of Munich, but will be in Salzburg and Vienna, so need to do a round trip.

Bavarian Pass at about 29 euros for up to five folks i believe is unlimited travel on regional trains for a calendar day - you need one pass to go down and another to go back if on different days

And you cannot use the faster trains but only regional trains - fine as 45 mins or so longer is no big deal for the immense savings.

For information on the Bayern (Bavaria) ticket, go here: http://tinyurl.com/29mh69.

Booked well in advance, you can get SparNight fares on the direct Vienna-Munich night train. Go to http://buchung.nachtzugreise.de and click on the British flag for English. Choose Wien Westbf as your departure station and Muenchen Hbf as your arrival station. Print your own tickets.

I was able to buy a Spar Schiene ticket for the trip from Vienna to Munich on January 2. We needed two tickets and since they only had one 29€ Spar Schiene ticket left, we had to also buy one regular fare ticket for 59€.

This is just to let others know there is a discount ticket between Vienna and Munich but they are very limited. They are only available on certain trains. The other city combinations are on the OBB web site, but we found we needed to call them to actually book the tickets. The ticket agent spoke English!

They will give you an customer # and you can pick up the tickets at the rail station once you arrive.

You can purchase the 1-Plus-Freizeit ticket for the Vienna-Salzburg segment. Purchase a Bayern-Ticket (similar to the Einfach-Raus Ticket) at the DB machine in Salzburg for the Salzburg-Munich segment. Also, you have a lot more flexibility if you purchase your tickets at the train station, rather than online.

We bought them on line(actually by phone) because we wanted to get Spar Schiene tickets which are only 29€ each. They're very limited. I waited and waited for the December schedule to become available so the Spar Schiene tickets would be available. I guess I missed it by a day as they only had one ticket remaining.

I think if we waited until we arrived in Austria, there would be no Spar Schiene tickets left for the train we wanted.
