Buying bus tickets
Apologies if this is a dumb question, but...I understand you can buy tickets for the SITA busses at many places, but can you buy tickets for future trips, ie in Ravello could I buy a ticket from Ravello to Amalfi and then from Amalfi to Salerno, or do I buy the ticket from Amalfi to Salerno only in Amalfi? Thanks, Julie

Ciao Julie,
Yes you can,and to save time and hassle it is a good idea to calculate what tickets you are going to need and buy them all in one go (you validate the ticket in the ticket machine on the bus at the beginning of each journey). Tickets for SITA bus services are usually for sale in Bars & Tabacci displaying the SITA logo |
Buses throughout Italy have similar ticket procedures. Tickets should be bought before boarding the bus, often from tobacconists. Therefore, it's best to buy what tickets you're likely to need when you can. Bus drivers do not sell tickets or check them. You validate the ticket in a machine on the bus which stamps the date and time on the ticket. You can be fined if an inspector catches you without a valid ticket, but this is rare. Napoli and the surrounding area have a unified ticketing system: tickets are priced by zone but can be used within the specified zones for any combination of trains, buses and funiculars.

GeoffHamer saying that inspectors checking bus tickets being rare is true. However, I road the bus on the Amalfi coast 3 or 4 times and EVERY single time, there was an inspector checking tickets. He charged fines on the spot if you didn't have a validated ticket.
It might of been because every bus I was on at the Amalfi coast was packed. |
Hi jck,
Actually, you are not buying a ticket from Amalfi to Salerno. You are buying tickets to ride the bus - any bus. Your hotel will be able to tell you the cost of your trip (usually they are only 1E, but longer trips can cost more). Have you considered taking the ferry from Amalfi to Salerno? It's a beautiful ride. The ferry docks about 2 blks SE of the train station. Why are you going to Salerno? |
Ira - we are travelling from Ravello to Florence in one day, thus ravello to amalfi to salerno to firenze (via Napoli or Roma). there is a bus from Amalfi to Naples, but it leaves too early for us. The ferry from amalfi to salerno leaves too late, 10am, we'd like to be in florence by 4pm or so.

Hi jc,
The 11:42 from Salerno gets to Florence at 16:31. The ferry ride from Amalfi to Salerno is only abbout 35 min. I suggest the ferry because it's a more scenic trip and there's more room for your luggage. Whatever you do, have a great trip. |
Cheers, Ira, perhaps that will work, and who wants to wake up so early on vacation after all? We were hoping to be able to see some sights in Florence after arriving, thus the desire to arrive a little earlier, but maybe it will be a bit too much of rushing. There is just too much to see in Florence, and unfortunately, we don't have alot of time to spend there this time, and I doubt we'll be getting back that way anytime soon. by the way, is the ferry station near the train station in Salerno?
