Also consider fractional ownership in brand name resorts. Unless you plan to be there very often, why spend money for the time you are not even there. You could buy a 3-month ownership, for example, instead of a 12-month ownership and have someone else worry about management of it all. Unless you live in Malibu or Hamptons, own a private jet, and can afford a property anywhere on the planet. In that case, I would like to be your friend

Can't swear to it, but I believe the inheritance laws are more an issue when you're looking to buy than they will be when you ( a non-Italian) depart the sphere.

After many generations the ownership of a property may be shared by many family members, or even contested. Until the sale is agreed to and cleared - after ownership is thoroughly documented - the property probably can't be sold. (See numerous accounts including Tim Parks' "Italian Neighbors" ... I think in that case they had trouble just getting the rental straightened out)

Look for a house in Marche with a company that guides your every move.

Another Italian company, MB, offers this page of tax info:

International Living magazine has a 5 page Acrobat document about buying in Italy that you can download free (you must offer up an email address) at http://www1.internationalliving.com/...tate/index.php
