Buy Euros Ahead of Trip on EBAY?

Is it possible that a person could be wanting to get rid of a lot of Euros and wanted to get a better price than he would at a bank?
Eg - sell at actual rate instead of buy/sell (beneficial to both.
Now if he bought them when the dollar was high he could be making a few pennies...no?

Absolutely, robjame.
I don't know where these people get off demanding that travelers "do this" or "do that" without considering what a specific person's circumstances are. Sounds pretty controlling to me.

The tweezers idea is a good one! I have never read that and I think I will pack a pair for my upcoming trip!

OK, I'll admit I was only referring to about 99% of the population when I suggested it was not a good idea to buy euro from someone on ebay. Of course if someone wants to do it, they have the right to do so. I suspected that ceilifinnigan wasn't looking for some offbeat shady deal, but was asking a question like "is this a good idea".
I guess some of you would say it can be a perfectly good thing to buy a Rolex from a guy on the street with an armful of them under his trenchcoat? Or it could be smart to buy all your stocks from a guy you pass sitting on a park bench who says "pssst. wanna buy some good stock?"
Yes, there are some people in very rare circumstances for whom all of these could be advantageous. So I'll ammend my statement. In fact for some people, including those with criminal records traveling on a false passport with no ability to use a legitimate bank -- buying euros on ebay could actually be the BEST choice.
Robespierre, it is funny that you get on such a high horse about others making blanket statements, when you give so many of those all the time, often indicating that anyone who doesn't do things your way is just plain wasteful or stupid. Paris transportation comes to mind immediately.

I've seen coins sold on ebay - to collectors - not for spending. I can;t imagine how anyone could possibly do this and make a profit - unless you are grossly overpaying versus the bureau de change in your departure airport (assuming you must have a small amount in euros before you go).
The other alternate is that they're selling monopoly
euros. Have you looked at their seller ratings? Do they say that they're selling actual legal tender? And if what you get is counterfeit or some sort of fake - how would you know? And what recourse would you have?
Although - given how caught up in the bidding process some buyers seem to be - and how little they know of the value of what they're buying - I guess anything is possible.
(I bought a handbag on ebay - and got a good discount. But I saw similar bags sold - for significantly MORE than they cost on the company's own web site - never mind a regular discounter.)

I know what you mean about the bidding frenzy. I actually did buy some diabetic test strips on ebay. Ultra one touch ones cost around $80 per hundred at most pharmacies (I save only a couple dollars from that at Costco). But I got 100 for $53 including shipping on Ebay. Yet I saw a couple of other lots that had bidding up to above $90 per hundred. Huh? Why would somebody do that when I'm sure their local pharmacy sells them cheaper than that?

1-Euro = $0.89. Now it's 1-Euro = $1.32. But that's still a lot better deal than paying a rate of $1.64 for each Euro (on Ebay) or a $2.00 offer you so generously make.

sometimes bid the prices up on their own auctions, making the item appear "hot" to some buyers. That could explain this odd offering, although I'm surprised it's not against the TOU.

Whether one has more money than sense can determine a course of action in many circumstances. I don't recall having said that one is more desirable than another.
Buying foreign currency on eBay might be beneficial to drug dealers or smugglers of other commodities. To say "No - unless they are giving them away" does not cover many of the possibilities.
But I think it's the dogmatic tone that is the biggest problem.

European countries = double digit unemployment, 6.46% infl.
I am not an economist and don't have a crystal ball but I'm going out on a limb to say that your assertion, "the USD crashes in a few weeks...which is quite inevitable" is tinfoiled hogwash.
