Buy a Microwave in Venice
 

I'm staying in an apartment in Venice, from which the oven was removed. I'm here for a month and want to be able to heat up foot, other than on stove top. Any ideas about where I can purchase an inexpensive microwave in Venice? Thanks.

All the apartments I've stayed in have provided microwaves. You should ask the landlord to get you a microwave. Why should you have to buy it?

I hear foot is pretty tasty this time of year.

There are a few small shops in Venice that sell these things, and the locals would know where to find them. I would ask a shop/restaurant owner. Much like hardware stores, most tourists don't have a need and/or don't record their experience.

I sincerely doubt you will find anything inexpensive. You might have better luck if you plan a trip to Mestre.

There is a fancy kitchen tool store not far from Piazza San Marco, at Ramo dei Fuseri. Nothing inexpensive there but the owner is lovely. I'm sure he would help you.

There are appliance shops in Venice that sell this sort of thing and they do not look expensive. Try the back streets in Cannaregio or south of Fondamenta Nuove.

Thanks all. Coin does not carry microwaves, at least not in Venice. My apartment is in Cannaregio, short walk from Fondamenta Nuove, so I'll ask around there. I have no idea why the stove was removed but I find it awkward to ask the landlord to buy me a microwave. Yes, I did type a "t" instead of a "d." So kind of you to notice.

I think you should expect at least some sort of heating appliance other than the stove.

Why on earth would you feel uncomfortable asking the landlord for a microwave (or to have the oven replaced)? That would seem to be the logical first move. He wouldn't be buying "you" a microwave - he would be furnishing/replacing a normal piece of equipment.

Or he should seriously reduce your rent - if you booked the place based on there being a kitchen/kitchenette he seems to be reneging on the contract . . .

Owner should provide microwave.. no questions asked. Don't be EMBARRASSED: everyone else staying there is going to want one.

Ask the landlord first - it's not an unreasonable request.
If you post a review afterwards and say that there was neither an oven nor a microwave, it may affect his future bookings.
I would want an oven or microwave if I were renting for a month.

I agree that it's worth the effort to contact the landlord. You're renting an apartment, not a hotel room. Is there a mini-refrigerator? A sink? Are there dishes supplied? If the landlord declines your request then you can do what you want with that information including finding another apartment. The oven was removed implies there is/was a kitchenette. It's like removing the bed. Kind of defeats the purpose of the rental.

Jumping to assumptions, anyone? Who said the OP is renting in the traditional manner?

I'm with the majority here. There is no harm in <i>asking</i> the landlord to supply a microwave.

NYVFoodSnob does have a point. You didn't actually say you are <i>renting</i>. If you are staying rent-free, then yes maybe buy a microwave. But if you are paying to stay there (as 'landlord' might indicate) - then definitely ask him/her to provide the mw.

Not sure if it's worth the trip to Mestre, but Media World would be a usual suspect to check out if it's easy for you to get there.

Yes, Ratti. Good catch. Didn't know they had a website. I don't think their prices are all that good, though, especially compared to what these things cost in America. But if you need to buy one, there it is.

I'm not renting but exchanging with owner's son. I have rented here before and there was an oven, so don't know what happened to it, although the space is empty. Apartment is nice, and very well equipped. Perhaps they thought I'd be eating out, or would only need the gas top, but I can't live on pasta for a month. Ratti--I'll look it up. Thanks.
