Busses to meet ferries upon arrival

Hi folks, a question about local busses from / to ferry terminals in Milos and Santorini. I think once upon a time busses would have been waiting at the ferry port when a ferry came in. is this still the case? I looked at some bus websites [KTEL] but there the information is at best vague. Apparently sometimes there are night busses on Santorini. But often not. ??? Does this mean any ferry arriving after, say, 22:00 won't be met with public transport? How do locals deal with this? Does everyone nowadays know someone with a car who will pick them up? Taxis seem to be extortionate, at least when looking at the website pricing.
thank you for reading this . I would be grateful for your information!

It depends on the Island.
You will usually find connecting buses at Skyros, Paralia Kymi, Mesta, etc. That means at places where only 1 or 2 ferries arrive per day.
But forget that on Islands like Kos, Rhodos, Mykonos.......

The port bus still meets the ferries on Santorini no matter when they arrive. It will take you into Fira where buses to the outlying villages will depart according to the posted schedule. The KTEL timetable will be adjusted according to demand.

thank you for your reply! This is almost too good to be true... my ferry arrives in the middle of the night!

Louisthedog--Catching the port bus when you arrive might not be your only challenge. If your hotel is not if Fira you will have to wait until the first morning bus to reach your hotel, and usually the check-in times are not before 1pm.

There is a local bus assigned every time a ferry is coming in Santorini. So if you wish to use the local bus you will find no problem even if there is after 22:00 at night. But the bus will take you to Fira (which is the capital). Thus you should book a hotel near the bus station.
If you miss the local bus there are many transfer companies at the port but also you can book a transfer online (which is not a taxi but shared) so you know for sure that someone will be waiting for you. That means that you can also book an accommodation away from Fira. I believe that this also goes the same for Milos,
