Buses to Siena
Is there a direct bus to Siena from the Florence Airport? (Or do we need to go to the bus station in Florence?) Also, does anyone have a web address for the bus schedules?

There is no direct bus from airport to Siena, you have to go to the bus station beside the train station in Florence.

On another thread (hill towns of Italy) - - I asked for advice about trying to do a "quickie" visit to Siena - - and this bus info might be very relevant, so I want to thank you Ann, for asking the question.

I have heard that taking the train from Florence to Siena leaves you "down the hill and outside the walls" - - is this true for the bus? and how long does the bus take?

It occurs to me that if some (or all) of us wants to take in a morning visit to Siena, we could do it by getting on the early morning bus departure, be back by noon - - and not fuss wth the car until we come back to Florence.

Or is this wishful thinking? Can we take in any "worthwhile" (oh, that dastardly word) visit to Siena, leaving at 6 am, and returning to Florence by noon?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Best wishes,

Rex
Rex:

I did the trip in June and it can be done in a half day. I posted a trip report - DON'T miss the Duomo museaum and, for those in your party that do not suffer from claustophobia, do to the top to the building.

My hotel advised the bus over the train (probably because of frequency) and it is a pleasant 70 min drive in a very nice, comfortable bus. The bus stops outside the train station (well it looked like a train station but I did NOT confirm that there were tracks there). Don;t forget to buy your return tickets as soon as you arrive as you then have confirmed seating for the return. The (easy) walk from the bus stop to the walled town centre is about 5-10 mins.

Try to get an early bus and either arrive buy the tickets beforehand (if you can) or arrive early as the bus fills up very quickly. I believe the web-site I posted in my first response also has the train schedule.

Hope this helps.

Regards .. Ger

Regards .. Ger

Hi, I just got back from Siena.

The first bus that leaves Florence for Siena is at 6:45am. You will arrive there at 8am. Make sure you take the Rapida bus. The other buses will take 15 to 30 minutes longer. The bus is non smoking and much easier than the train from Florence to Siena.

The bus stop is about a 15 minute walk to the Campo and the Duomo.
It is not really within walking distance of the train Siena station. There are buses and cabs for that.

Check out this web site for more info on the bus:
http://www.turismoverde.com/italia/trasport/bus6fi3.htm
