Bus system along Amalfi Coast.

I have a few questions about the buses that run along the Amalfi Coast. We will be using them to get around the AC (staying one week in Praiano and one week in Ravello). I have found the bus schedules on the SITA site, but I was wondering, how do we know which bus to take? It seems like there are many different buses that run along the coast... Also, do the bus drivers call out the stops, and if so, do they call out the name of the town? I've been to Rome before, do the tickets work the same way i.e. are they purchased from a tobacco shop and then stamped onboard? Thanks in advance!

Hi B,

I saw only the SITA bus, Sorrento/Amalfi, and the Orange bus (about 6 10 km) each side of Positano.

You must buy your tickets in advance for the SITA buses and stamp them. IIRC, you can get 1, 2, 4 and 10 at a time. (Cheaper the more you buy.)

The farther you go the more you have to pay.

You can pay on the bus for the Orange bus (1E).

The bus drivers call out the names of the towns.

A lot of busses congregate in Amalfi and go out from there, as many people may transfer there. They put signs in the windows for which bus is going where. We learned the Ravello bus in Amalfi is sort of apart from the others -- to the south of the big main square where most of the other busses were.
We explained to our bus driver to Ravello where we were going and asked about the specific stop the hotel told us to go to. But the driver insisted on making a special stop for us that was closer to our hotel. It was, but we had to lug our luggage up a long flight of stairs to our hotel. If he had taken us to the stop we wanted, we could have easily rolled them to the hotel.

The point is, though, that the drivers are very friendly. It's always a good idea to tell them when you get on where you want off, and they usually will make sure you do.

The main bus "yard" in Amalfi is to die for (believe it or not). Right up against the breakwater. That's where you transfer to the Ravello buses. Which are easy to identify -- they have an electronically-signed "RAVELLO" across the front.

Thanks, it's much clearer now! :)

We just returned from Amalfi Coast and used the SITA bus system extensively.

It is easy enough once you get the hang of it.

The schedules (and tickets) are available in any of the Tabbachi shops and most of the schedules are also posted or available in tourist info booths. You do need to purchase tickets in advance for the buses that take you between the towns on the coast - Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Praiano, Ravello, etc.

The bus drivers differed in their 'helpfulness' in calling stops and in advising you which stop may be closest to your destination. I think it's a good idea to ask around a bit before you get on the bus, so you know. Other passengers on the bus were usually quite helpful when the bus driver appeared not to be.

The orange SITA buses take you within the towns and cost $1 each trip (ticket is good for an hour after validating). Again, schedules readily available and posted - though the buses are quite frequent, so we never really found a schedule necessary.

The stops for the blue buses and the orange buses may be close to each other, but not the same. Again, good to double check with the other people waiting, or the people in the Tabbachi selling the tickets.

Buon viaggio!

this thread was very useful...
i am going to be in almafi too, (first time in italy) and was thinking about getting the arte card. we will be staying in amalfi but taking trains to naples, pompeii, and around the coast.
have any of you used this and does it work the same. ie. get the card and have the bus driver stamp it or whatever?
