I like the Barron's "At-A-Glance" pocket translations guides. Along with phonetic pronunciations (which are essential!), they're chock full of other useful and valuable tips and information. And, they're very comprehensive and well organized.

My husband got the Lonely Planet phrase book and I got the Berlitz phrase book for our upcoming trip. We'll see which is best. They are both pocket size and seem to have a lot of useful information and phrases- all divided by categories such as dining out, transportation, etc. There is also and English/Italian dictionary in the back.
