Bus/Coach Travel in Scotland
Hi,
I am planning a trip to Scotland and need some information on bus/coach travel. I plan to take the trains from London to Edinburgh to Stirling to Inverness, the major cities, etc. However, I am having a bit of trouble finding out what busses serve in between those areas. For example, if I am staying in Inverness and want to go to Culloden or Fort William. Do I have to take taxis the whole time or is there a bus service? Thanks So Much for the help! Devon |
There are buses between towns at least, Devon. So Inverness to Fort William- no problem. Inverness to the town of Culloden no problem (I'm not quite so sure about the battlefield, but I'll try to check.
One of the main bus companies is National Express http://www.nationalexpress.com/neh.cfm Another is City Link http://www.citylink.co.uk/ Most big towns have their own in town service. Ask at the local tourist information office or bus station for a timetable. And to bring it all together there's an online guide to all public transport http://www.travelinescotland.com/ For very rural places you might try the post bus service http://www.travelinescotland.com/ I haven't quite got to the bottom of the Culloden question, but- "For some destinations the best bet is to take Guide Friday?s open top bus which not only takes you around the city but also continues to Culloden Battlefield." |
TB4M8... you will have no problem figuring out the local coach system when you arrive. We found local coaches would drop us off near sites and then we could pick it up on a return run even outside of the regular stops. Ask at the tourist bureau above Waverly station for time tables and some advice. Ask drivers for help. Trust me, if I can figure out a coach trip, ANYONE can figure it out. Have a grand time!

Oh, and I forgot to mention this is a grand way to travel. You get to look around, enjoy the sights. Occasionally do you get on a coach filled with schoolkids and a crazed driver LOL... but that doesn't happen that often. Take the Coach! It's great.

You might also want to remember that some of the minor Scottish railway lines are outstanding for scenery.
