Burgundy Stop on France Trip?

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we leave Wednesday for 12 nights in France. After 5 nights in Paris, 1 in Versaille and 3 in Amboise, we have 2 nights left, before our final evening near CDG.

I have not done much reasearch on Burgundy, but that now appears to be a nice area for us to spend our last two nights. Is Avallon a good place to spend those two nights? Is it in a good area for exploring (we will have a car)?

As far as interests, we will have seen many chateau in the Loire and probably would be interested in seeing some of the medieval villages/castles, as well as just sitting and enjoying a cup of coffee in a nice cafe. We also love good wine and food.

As far as a place to stay, would anyone recommend the Hostellerie Moulin des Ruats?

Thanks,
Mark

Welcome to Burgundy marigny! :-)
I'm sure you'll enjoy Avallon (and surely Vezelay only about 20km form there)
Le moulin des Ruats is outside Avallon by the small river "le Cousin". It has got nice reviews somewhere (TA?)
You can also try l'Hostellerie de la Poste in the town center.
Further south you can find Chateauneuf en Auxois and its nice medieval castle.
Happy travels!

Burgundy is one of my two favorite areas in France (the other is Provence)--the countryside is beautiful, and there is a great deal to see. If you want some information on sightseeing in Burgundy, send me a message at

I love the Moulin des Ruats, and have stayed there several times because of the peaceful location and it's a rare place to serve authentic truite Bleu. One of my favorite writers, MFK Fisher also tasted her first truite bleu there.
Another place to stay is the Hotel La Poste as Coco has mentioned, right in th center of town and it is charming.
