Burgundy in May
I have two nights to spend in between Paris and Geneva in late May, and am thinking of spending them somewhere in Burgundy. A cooking class would be nice. Any suggestions?

We enjoyed two nice, full days (3 nights) in Beaune last June. It's a completely Burgundy-wines oriented town (we're wine drinkers, so that was an attraction for us), and a beautiful small, walled (the center of the town) community. The Hospices de Beaune is a don't miss visit in the center of Beaune. We stayed at the modest, but extremely pleasant family-owned Hotel Bretonnière just one street from the central Beaune village. We'd do it again with joy.

We stayed at Domaine des Anges in Puligny-Montrachet last fall. Gorgeous small village surrounded by vineyards, great rooms and food and wonderful hospitality from the owners, two British ex-pats with deep knowledge of France.
They don't have a web site, but you can inquire at www.domainedesanges.fr This is only 10-12 kilometers from Beaune. |
Beaune and the area around it are to me the best of Burgundy for foreign tourists - the Burgundy of vineyards and hills etched in our minds' eyes - Beaune is a bigger town but any town on the Burgundy Wine Road north and south of town would be fine as well - like one LikeLivingThere proposes.
En route to Beaune you can stop by Vezelay, an incredible place - once one of the medieval Christian world's biggest pilgrimmage meccas - the pilgrimmage torrent dried to a trickle after the town's holy relic - the very bones of Mary Magdalene (i think!) were exposed as fakes - the city became de-populated and overgrown but when uncovered in the 1800s was in pristine medieval condition - the huge basilica is one of the finest religious edifices in France. A great short few-hour stop about half-way to Beaune. |
Sorry, it's [email protected]. Too much white Burgundy on the first post, I guess.

As for the cooking class, you can combine a few hours to visit the historic centre of Dijon (capital of Burgundy) and go to the class at "L'atelier des chefs" for lunch time.
For 15€ you cook (meat or fish + vegetables) and you can eat on the premises, in one hour time. http://www.myhomeindijon.com/cooking_class.htm A nice place to have fun, eat good things and meet people. Then go to the nearest tourist office rue des Forges to ask for the owl's trail brochure and see the main sites. http://www.travelsignposts.com/Desti...jon/?g2_page=3 Enjoy! :-) coco |
