Burgundy/Beaune & Dijon
Hello everyone! My future husband and I are doing our honeymoon in Burgundy and Dijon.
So far, I have booked us for four nights at Maison du Colombier http://www.maisonducolombier.com/ And we will be staying two nights in dijon- we will have a car the entire time. I need some help on where to stay in Dijon- some have suggested cocodijon but she is booked the entire time we are there- any other thoughts to be walking distance to everything? Also, would really love some recommendation on what to do in Beaune- I wanted us to do a day trip to a vineyard/wine tasting but some of them are SO expensive- we would want something that is all day and picks us up and takes us to a vineyard. Any other thoughts on what to do for four days? Any help is appreciated! |
If car day trip to vineyards yourself along the Route des vins Bourgogne - between Beaune and Dijon - like to Nuits-Saints-Georges or other cute wine towns but if wanting to imbibe don't drive - road side checks are common and legal booze limited rather low.
Car is uselss in Dijon- if taking wine tour for a day and two days in Dijon forget the car. Follow the Owl Trail in Dijon - tourist office has info on it - passes by lots of historic places. Beaune is a sweet regional town with its own wine tours but otherwise little exceptional- do a drive along the wine road even if not visiting vineyards (smaller ones you pass by may not even charge). |
The Hospices Dieu in Beaune is one of the most beautiful and beautifully preserved historic buildings I've ever seen. It also houses a gallery that has stunning works.

Also read about the great cathedrals of Burgundy. It's more than wine.

If you're totally into wine, you may not want to take time out for other things, but if you're not and if you're interested in nonwine-related things, Burgundy is full of beautiful villages that are an easy drive from Beaune. Among these are Vezelay, with its magnificent church and charming lanes; Noyers-sur-Serein, with many colombages, or half-timbered houses, and ancient walls; Semur-en-Auxois (walls, beautiful medieval town); Chateauneuf-en-Auxois, with its ancient chateau; Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, east of Beaune, also makes a fine destination (it was the town used in the filming of Chocolate, with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, if you've seen that film).
Heading south, you can visit Tournus. And there are beautiful chateaux--Sully is about an hour west of Beaune. And of course you'll want to just drive through the vineyards and at least take the obligatory photo of the Clos de Vougeot. Should I stop? I could keep going. The point is that there are so many things to do you could fill weeks--in fact, we have. We really like Beaune, even if it is a one-trick pony. After all, what a pony! And congratulations on your marriage. You've picked a wonderful place for your honeymoon. |
If I had a car in Beaune I'd think about day tripping to Dijon and then exploring a bit - like tuscanlifeedit says - Vezelay is a famous site that is a reasonable drive - in medieval days one of the most thriving pilgrimage sites in Europe -lovely old town in pristine medieval condition - draped over a hill-nice basilica.
Auxerre is a wonderful regional town near Vezelay. Dijon like most French cities outside of Paris can be dull after shop hours close and on Sundays. Think about putting the car to good use or not even renting one if just Beaune and Dijon. How are you getting to Beaune and where are you heading after? |
Saving this for a return to Burgundy.

wow thank you everyone! This has been very helpful.
Does anyone have any recommendations on where to stay in Dijon? We would want to stay somewhere that has more shops/activities etc. After this trip, we are going to Paris for two days before the flight back. In terms of Paris, is it best to stay near the Eiffel Tower or is there another area that would be better? |
Paris is a large city, there is no reason whatsoever to stay near one particular tourist landmark. Why would you think that would be the best place to stay, anyway? It isn't the center of the city and especially not historically. Most people don't understand what staying right near a famous landmark means. It means not a normal neighborhood. Some people like staying in that general arrondisment, but not right near the Eiffel Tower (ugh).

We stayed at Le Petit Tertre in Dijon which was wonderful in all respects, including location.
We did a wine tour when we were in Beaune through Burgundy Discovery. Although it was expensive, it was probably the highlight of our trip. Here is a link to my trip report from last year: http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...h-burgundy.cfm |
Bookmarking. We're planning 4 nights in Beaune in September!

we booked Le Cloche! :) thank you for the suggestions!
I also picked a hotel near Notre Dame; locations sounds to be more central to shops and restaurants. Now onto find some wine tours in Beaune! |
