Burg Eltz - where to stay nearby

Hi all. We will be driving to the Burg Eltz area from Wurzburg and would like to stay somewhere not too far from the castle for early touring the next day.

I read maitaitom's insights on his visit, from Rick Steves:

<<<I had read in Steves' book not to follow the signs to Burg Eltz, because those were longer hikes. Instead we ignored the Eltz signs in Moselkern and followed the signs to Munstermaifeld as he had suggested. We kept the faith because it seemed like we were headed in the wrong direction. However, in about seven kilometers we came to a T in the road. Signs to Burg Eltz were seen again. We made a left and went though Wierscheim and from that town's exit sign it was only 2km to the Burg Eltz Upper parking facility. It was an easy 10 -15 minute walk down to the castle from there<<<<

Should we look to stay near Munstermaifeld? We are looking for a quad room and woudl appreciate any suggestions.

Hi,

We stayed just across the Mosel from Cochem, in Valwig, for 4 nights in 10/07. Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but we liked our stay at the Hotel Rebenhof. They offer double rooms and apartments.

It's an easy drive to Burg Eltz. Park in the lot and walk down to the castle. If you don't feel like walking back, there's a shuttle van that takes you back for 1.50 Euro pp.

Cochem was our favorite town along the Mosel. We visited Beilstein, Zell, Bernkastel and Trier.

We have some pic's at:

You'll definitely have many more lodging options in Cochem, which is a lively town right on the river. The villages closer to Burg Eltz are very small. We enjoyed our stay at the very atmospheric Alte Thorschenke but there are many others to choose from.

Thank you - will look in Cochem; I wanted to see this town as well.

How long should we budget to tour Burg Eltz?

Cochem is a fairy-tale town of your dreams!

The tour is about 40 minutes. If you drive there, the walk down from the lot is about 15 to 20 minutes. To return you'll need to walk back up or you can take the shuttle van either way.

We stayed in Beilstein at Hotel Haus Lipmann, which also has a good restaurant.
