+ Burano, Morano &Torcello??

Hi Folks,

When I was 14, I visited Venice and saw glass blowing on the island of Murano. Again, now with family and kids of 15 + 12 we will go. Besides glass viewing, is there a town worth seeing or anything else?

What is Burano famous for? Lace? What is there to do/see? Can't you get lace in Venice? Torcello is more desolate and much further away so we will avoid that.

Read many threads but did not get good information about Burano.

Any information would be appreciated. Grazie!! -Debbie

Burano is VERY picturesque, with the buildings painted in a range of pastel colors. And we bought a beautiful laced tablecloth there...

Ciaodeb,
How nice for your family to take a trip like this! I wouldn't be too quick to eliminate Torcello. Although it takes a little longer to get there, I wouldn't call it desolate. It is charming and has a beautiful cathedral with gorgeous Byzantine mosaics and far fewer people to jockey around to see them. It's a pleasant 10-15 minute walk from the boat stop, and the trip across the lagaoon is interesting. This of course all depends on how much time you have overall for Venice, and how interested you might or might not be in the architecture etc. But if you can't find time this trip, and ever make it back, this makes a pretty neat side trip.

As for Burano, yes it is famous for lace, but besides that it is a very quaint, laid back, colorful and picturesque place. This also probably depends on how much time you have to explore Venice itself. Be sure to get away from the main "sights" of Venice. The architecture and romance of Venice is the biggest sight there is to see. Hope you have a great trip!

Hi, ciaodeb -
I found the glass museum in Murano fascinating.
Enjoy!

Thanks for the information to you ALL, Idh, kja and TuckH, whom we both recently e-mailed to each other.

We've 3 nights but 2.5 days in Venice. I definitly want to get to the islands. I would like to get to all three islands, if possible. Definitly Murano and Burano. How long is Murano glass tour? I was there as a kid but cannot recall that nor how we got from island to island. I know it is by boat but do you hail a boat at local dock?

Depending on time, I hope we can venture to Torcello! My husband and I love islands so we will try hard to see all three! Years ago we went to the Egadi Isole off Sicily. They were fantastic!!

Torcello is worth seeing and is very close to Burano. We enjoyed all three islands.
