bugs on Amalfi Coast?
 

We're going on our honeymoon to the Amalfi Coast in just two weeks! Anyone know if there are alot of bugs there this time of year? Should we bring bug spray? Any other tips?

I don't know that they are a real problem everywhere, but if you are bother by mosquitoes, you will probably need something. I am not all bother by mosquitoes (have not a bite since I was a child), but we were in a restaurant in Positano eating in the garden, and my sister-in-law was being eaten alive! The waiter brought her some spray, and she went in the restroom and sprayed her legs. That was the only time we even thought about bugs.

Lori,<BR><BR>I tend to have a major problem with mosquitos and end up in hospital having been bitten soo badly the bites look like I've been bitten by something huge!!<BR><BR>Saying that though, I now take a certain tablet which seems to change the scent which is given off to mosquitos and have not had much of a problem since.<BR><BR>Italy does have quite a few mosquitos, but if you don't normally have a problem with them, you should be fine. I have developed a severe allergy to Italian mosquitoes, and I was bitten on the Amalfi Coast, resulting in severe swelling. You can buy these plug-in mosquito repellents, which I have found to be the most effective. <BR><BR>Also, assuming you are coming from the U.S., buy some Skin So Soft, which you can buy in most grocery stores and pharmacies. It was or still made by Avon but now it is mass marketed. In other words, you don't have to wait until the Avon lady rings the doorbell.

I was there last summer in Pasitano, Capri, Ravello, and don't remember having a bug problem at all. Strongly suggest going to Ravello.

Simple houseflies were a bit of a novelty while we were in Positano.<BR> <BR>We stayed at Le Sirenuse and were suprised to find so many of them in our room when we checked in (like 10-15). I started to "dispose" of them with a newspaper or something, but the supply seemed to outdo me. Our room was adorned with fresh fruit and flowers, so I put them on the balcony thinking that they were the attraction, but the flies continued to come in (they entered through the doors to the balcony which we opted to keep open; the sounds & smell of the sea were well worth the bug issues). They weren't really a nuisance, just always present. Over our 4 day stay I must have killed 50 of them.<BR><BR>Le Sirenuse ranks a 10 in my book, even with houseflies. Just returned from the South last week. I don't usually react badly to mosquitos. I was badly bitten up one night in a restaurant garden in Sorrento. The bites were so strange,I got about seven on my legs within 5 minutes. They started off looking like regular mosquito bites. Were gone the next morning and then 24 hrs. later huge hot welts in their place. I suffered for several days , using ice and a cortisone cream. In hindsight an antihistimine might have been better.<BR>Judy

Tina, you are right it was Brewer's Yeast I was using. I am amazed at how well it has worked for me! It was also recommended to me to use Vitamin B tablets. I am not quite sure why, but it seems to do the trick.<BR><BR><BR>Natalie

We were there last year in July for several weeks. We didn't have a problem with mosquitoes until we went to stay at a villa in the hills of Massa Lubrense. Not sure if they were mosquitoes, but they were a small flying bug. They were tinier than mosquitoes we have around here. The red swelling at the site of the bite did not go away for a long time - still had some for a week or two after we returned home. They did not care for my husband so they left him alone!
