Budman no Italy trip report?

Hi Budman I noticed from other posts that you had done a trip to Italy , recently. I have been awaiting a trip report as we are booked for July 2005(using aeroplan miles so had to book early). Your advice for our Ireland trip was invaluable so I am awaiting your comments on Locanda Rosati as we paln to spend time in Orvieto prior to taking our cruise.I noticed on their site they have a pool so I thought with the kids this would be a good choice. I have e-mailed them with no reply did you find you needed to contact them by fax or phone or should I just persist. Did you spend any time in Florence or CT if so would love hotel recommendations for those places. Thanks. Faye.

Hi Faye,

It is always a good idea to phone or Fax to Europe, especially small hotels.

If you dial 1016868 first, it's only 10cts/min.

Thank you Ira. I have received info from you regarding driving in Italy on another of my posts. We have decided to drive from Rome to Florence despite the general consensus that driving in Florence is a nightmare. For us it just makes sense, and we drive on the same side of the road in South Africa so that will not be a concern. I am looking at Hotel Silla for the stopover in Florence as it appears it is not difficult to approach this hotel by car.Would you book this far ahead or not? I have read that you stayed at B&B Peterson but I could not find any info about it regarding parking nearby or on site.

An advertisement? Huh? Do you think Ira owns those discount phone numbers? How is giving the cheap way to call any different that saying, Expedia has a sale now on trips to Paris?

But by the way, I use 101-6400 and it only cost 4.9 cents per minute -- that's half price of ira's number. So go ahead, TopMan, accuse me of advertising too!

Faye,

I'm going to post a kinda/sorta trip report, but I've been very busy both at work (end of the FY) and making my wine. Wasn't ready for the barrel today, definitely tomorrow.

Here's a quickie -- Orvieto was GREAT!!! We enjoyed Locanda Rosati. Great surroundings and pool. The weather was a little too cold for us at this time of the year to swim. 5-6 miles outside of Orvieto. Great views/pictures traveling from Locanda to Orvieto. Dinner at night was great - 4 courses, all the wine & grappa & limoncelle you could drink. 27.5 Euro per person. Since you have kids, there was a Trattoia la Mora down the street that was very reasonable and had great food. 2 Euro for a bottle of house wine. Great deal.

B&B Peterson? 62 Euro for a double room, but you get what you pay for. No parking.

Parking in Florence? It will cost you a fortune. It cost me 61 Euro for one day. Ouch!! I thought it was 1 Euro an hour -- ended up being 3 Euro an hour. Ouch again!!! Recommend against it -- Park outside the city and take shuttles inside. Better yet, unless you are into museums and art, skip Florence.

Loved the towns and drive between Siena and Florence on R222 -- nice scenery.

Stayed north of Orvieto in Montepulciano for a week. Loved the hill towns in the surrounding areas.

More to follow.

Hi DOCK,
I think you've made a big mistake, they do not drive on the same side of the road as us in Italy, or anywhere else in Europe, only in the UK. We love Florence and were there in April for the second time, but you have to know that the traffic is pretty hectic.

Florence is great and I personally don't think it is just about art, it's a beautiful city, great shopping too. July may be a bit hot, but I guess you must be bound by school holidays.

Happy planning
