Budget restaurants in the 5th (Paris)?
 

Am starting to research (and fantasize about) restaurants in my upcoming May trip--inexpensive, ca. 20-25 Euro per person. I'm staying at the Hotel St Jacques on the Rue des Ecoles and would prefer things within walking distance. Am interested in French food, but also seek good Moroccan/North African places; Italian places; and Greek places for variety. Would also like recommendations for good cafes for breakfast/snacks.

I remember there are a bunch of Greek places in the Rue de la Harpe/Rue de la Huchette area, but I didn't know which ones were good on my last visit 6 yrs ago, so didn't try any. I'm traveling alone, so I want a quiet Greek place, not a plate-smashing, dancing, tourist-group kind of place.

Hidden among all those cheap touristy places in the Huchette area there really is some decent and still inexpensive eating, but I don't have any particular ones to suggest.

Another good area is Rue Mouffetard, including a couple small good Greek places that are more the quiet variety with no plate throwing.

Nessundorma has suggested some nice moderate restaurants. Some of those are going to run 30 or more euro before wine. I'm not sure if that's what you mean by "budget" -- I was guessing you're thinking more of about half that price. No? If I recall LES VIGNES DU PANTHEON is in that lower range, however.

Auberge du Jarente on rue Jarente in the Marais. Metro St. Paul. 19€ menue, excellent cassoulet and magret.
Au Piano Muet on rue Mouffetard. Raclette and "grill at the table" meat. Wonderful chicken liver salad.

we almost went into a recommended "les bombardiers" up by the pantheon, which looked like a decent place.it is a pub, not sure if it was french or british style.

opted for the tableclothed bistrot nearby, le berthoud.

I'm marking this page for myself as I will be staying in the 5th this April (at least I think I am!).

Agree that there are some good places rue de la Huchette/Harpe. I was a woman traveling alone, and I was treated nicely and not made to feel ill at ease. I just took a chance on a couple since I didn't have any specific recommendations.

Mouffetard is also a good place to just take a chance. Lots and lots of choices and have not been disappointed.

Good point about the discount at flobrasseries.com. I've only eaten at Bofinger so I can't comment specifically on the one mentioned but I would be willing to try it. You can't beat the discount, but when I was there last it was 20% - have they lowered it to 15?

Slightly over your 25 euro limit from my trip last month:

Le Pre Verre (menu at dinner was 25.50 without wine, I believe there is a 12.50 lunch menu including wine)

Le Petit Prince de Paris (we paid 54.00 for two, without wine).

A nice cafe is La Methode, across the street from the old Ecole Polytechnique at the corner of rue de la Montagne Ste. Genevieve and rue Descartes.

Diagonally opposite from that is the lovely wine bar Les Pipos.

The Bombardier is indeed a British style pub with mostly French patrons, at least when we were there on two occasions last year.

We also enjoyed meals last year at Les Fetes Galantes and Chantairelles.

Restaurants, cafes and bars are thick on the ground in this neighborhood.

I second Auberge du Jarente and also its neighbour Pitchi Poi at No 9 Place du Marche Ste Catherine in the Marais. I had a fantastic tagliatelle with pate and green vinaigrette salad at the former and a really tasty and filling "assiette" (mixed plate of interesting bits and pieces including delicious chopped liver) at the latter for under 25 Euros.

Another good value place in the Marais is Au Rendezvous des Amis at 10 rue Ste Croix de la Bretonnerie which is very reasonable - I love its warm goats cheese salad.

In the 5th at the corner of rue Haut pave/rue Frederic Sauton and rue des grands degres, a block from the Seine and about 3 blocks from St Michel, the restaurant Les Degres de Notre Dame (also has 10 hotel rooms above) has a good Moroccan menu but it could be +25 Euros - you could call
