Budget hotels in Paris!?

Hello everyone!

I am going to Europe in October with my new bride for our Honeymoon! We plan on staying 3 nights in Paris as one of our legs and we are having trouble deciding where to stay. I have been to Paris only one time but still do not have a good idea of the best place to stay.

As usual, we want to be centralized with some great cafe's and restaurants nearby. Also we will be taking the Eurostar in Paris from London, so something easy to get to from the Metro would be nice as well!

Our Budget is under $150ish a night!

Thanks!!!

Austin

This place was recommended to me when I visited Paris last month; I wound up getting two free nights via a credit card award instead, but I considered this hotel:

http://www.hotel-paris-orient.com/

Sounds like a very modest hotel but gets decent reviews:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...de_France.html

You might also consider Priceline's "Name Your Own Price." Check the site betterbidding.com to see what hotels people might be getting with Priceline for October at what price. Expect to get a clean, dull business hotel - probably not romantic for a honeymoon, but if you bid wisely, you can often get a great deal.

By the way: the free hotel I got last month in Paris was the amazing Hyatt Place Vendome. Last year, Hyatt had a deal with their Chase Visa (normally $75 annual fee) to waive the fee for the first year - but for signing up for the card you get two award nights at any Hyatt hotel, pending availability. I almost couldn't use my nights but got them extended 30 days, then called Hyatt to check availability less than a month before arrival and was stunned that they had two open nights at the Hyatt Place Vendome. Best available rate (non-refundable) was about $800 USD per night at the time I booked the free nights.

In retrospect, even the $75 annual fee would have been well worth it just to get two nights there. You could consider that option - would be a great place for a honeymoon. Of course, you can't guarantee that with all the trouble you would be able to get two nights when you need them. (There's another Hyatt hotel in Paris that's decent too so you have another option there.) Something to consider! Their latest card also has no foreign transaction fees and has a chip which will work better in Europe than a US credit card with just the old-style magnetic strip.

A honeymoon in Paris in October on less than $150 USD/night? Even the modest 2-star mentioned above, the Hôtel New Orient in the 8th, will break your budget in October. And if you want to be more centrally located, if will cost you a bit more, but not that much if you pick the right property.

You can try the 2-star Hôtel de l'Empereur, which is just across from The Invalides, but the least expensive rate in mid-October is €170 EU/night, including tax. There is also the 3-star Hotel Muguet, 11 Rue Chevert, just down the street, and priced the same.

That is only around 100 euro nowadays, I'm sure you know, and there are not very many hotels in central Paris for that rate. So you won't have a lot of choice. I don't stay in the most expensive arrondisements and that rate is still not going to get a 2 or 3* hotel where I stay, unfortunately. And October is peak rate season, also, of course.

These are the only hotels I know in the center close to that rate for a double
http://www.hotel-collegedefrance.com/
Check the "promotional" rates on there for a double room with balcony, that is around 115 euro and you might get it (those are often rates for advance purchase, at least 3 nights).

This place is pretty basic but is in your price range and a good location http://www.saintpierre-hotel.com/

The 2* hotel Familia is also in the Latin Qtr and maybe has a little style, its rates are more like 120 euro for a double. http://www.familiahotel.com/

This hotel is in the Marais, another good place for you and is also in your price range, although again pretty basic (that goes with that price, of course)

YOu might consider Priceline. Also, October is a busy time in Paris, you'd better starting making arrangements for hotels.

I have stayed at the Hotel Saint Pierre, its a great budget hotel in a great area. love it, but I can't say its romantic or beautiful. Clean, well located yes.. and cheap yes, I would stay there again, so if money is tight , and they have a room, then take it.

I have also stayed at Hotel Diana, also great area, and rates can be cheap.

There's one in the 11th; I am spacing the name. Poster jamikins has stayed there with her husband and they liked it.

Oh, I know: Hotel Cosmos.

http://www.cosmos-hotel-paris.com/fr,1,6436.html

I've not stayed there but you can search for jamikins' report. I have it saved for the next time I go to Paris and want to save some money.

Hotel Marignan is 110€ in October which is your budget - that's for a room with ensuite toilet and shower. It's definitely a budget hotel - no lift, no TV. But it's clean, includes breakfast (unusual in Paris) and is superbly located just down the street from the Cluny and five minutes from Notre Dame. I have stayed there and will stay there again. http://www.hotel-marignan.com/

I have stayed at both the Hotel Muguet and New Orient over the years and liked both. Each was plain but comfortable, the New Orient might have a bit more charm. If the same people own the New Orient they were very nice. The Muguet had air conditioning which we needed one year in mid-September but you probably won't need in October.

I highly recommend extending your stay in Paris if at all possible. It will be a wonderful place to honeymoon.

I have been hearing very very good things about the Grand Hotel Francais in the 11th. Reviews are very good and here is a page with their special offers, including an advance purchase for 98 euro.

http://www.grand-hotel-francais.fr/en/special_offers/

I think this would be a great choice.

Just got back from Paris this morning and stayed at Hotel Cosmos again. Great price, very basic room (you might want more charm for a honeymoon...). We LOVE the area. Cafe beside the hotel is great, and the Astier restaurant is very good just across the road (reservations are required). You can get there easily from Gare du Nord on Line 5 getting off at Oberkampf and walking the short few blocks to the hotel.

We have also stayed at New Orient but we dont like the area as much. The hotel itself was nicer and more charming than Cosmos but we didnt find the area as much fun and it wasnt overly convenient from a transport perspective.

Enjoy!

I have stayed there & it is perfectly fine w/subway 2 blocks away & easy walk from the RER. Also (2) Monprix, cafes, Starbucks, etc.

This is a bit out of your price range but others might be interested to know about the Hotel Hospitel

Hard to get more central than the ile de la cite! Even living in Paris I never knew about it til a French friend told me about it.

I would back up jamikins's comments on the Cosmos, having now stayed there myself - in general terms: it's clean, comfortable, functional, pleasant enough reception staff, and very good value. It's well situated on a direct bus route from the Gare du Nord, so no hassle with the metro, and some pleasant cafés around (Café de l'Industrie on the main road is just what one might imagine as a typical neighbourhood café). It's not very touristed but a regular residential sort of area. BUT I too wonder if it's quite what you're looking for in a honeymoon hotel - functional rather than romantic, and no frou-frou or little pampering extras. I would stay there again, but I have to say, unless they had a circus troupe juggling with their suitcases when I was there, I think there may be something in the structure of the building that magnifies the sound of fairly ordinary movement in some of the rooms, which might be tiresome.

A similar hotel I've stayed at, which is closer to the Marais (and therefore a bit pricier, but possibly still within your budget) is the Hotel Américain on Rue Charlot, by République metro (or again, there's a direct bus route from the Gare du Nord). No shortage of places to eat round about.

Familiarise yourself with the public transport map at
http://www.ratp.fr/plan-interactif/

And save time and fuss by getting a carnet of tickets in the Eurostar lounge at St Pancras (and they sometimes have them on the train): more expensive than buying them in Paris, but it saves time and hassle at the Gare du Nord.

Why would it save time and fuss or hassle to get a carnet in London rather than in Paris? YOu just buy them from a machine (or window if you want) at the entrance to the metro section (or in other places at the station where they have machines), I don't see how it could save either, it only takes a minute or so. YOu are going to have to have some euro on you anyway at that point (you need money for the machines, of course, if your credit card doesn't work). I presume the transaction is the same in London, you have to buy them somehow. I believe it is about a 20 pct markup.

I am a bit surprised at the concern about basic accommodations on a honeymoon. They will be in Paris, which is all the romance they need, IMO. I am assuming that they are young...(Are you, gaines?) If so, young, in love, in Paris......that is enough to be happy!

I too can recommend Cosmo's Hotel (or Hotel Cosmos!) as a great budget place to stay

http://www.cosmos-hotel-paris.com/fr,1,6436.html

But it is fairly basic and not particularly special or romantic I don't think.

A better bet might be the Jeanne d'Arc in the Marais which is absolutely charming, but gets booked up well in advance. You can get breakfast delivered to your room - nice for honeymooners!
