Budget hotels in Athens seem charmless - any recommendations for Athens hotel under $200 in the Plaka but with a little charm?

I spent a few nights at the Elektra Palace in 2005 and in my opinion, the place has no charm at all...it is more on the big and glossy side. Nor are staff particularly friendly. It is not a bad hotel by any means but I would probably stay someplace else on my next trip.

Interesting ekscrunchy and thanks for the heads up. For some reason the Electra Palace is often recommended by Fodors' posters but sounds like not because of the hotel's charm but because it has the comforts of North American hotels? Where would you stay next time?

Lily I would say that, yes, it does have those comforts. I have no plans to return to Athens so I don't know the hotel situation. But I would not stay in Plaka..I just did not see the appeal of that area; there were too many postcard shops and tourist-oriented stores. Nice to walk around for an hour or two, but I would look elsewhere for a hotel. Also, the better restaurants do not seem to be in Plaka so for us it meant taking a taxi at night when we went for dinner.

I was wondering about staying in Plaka myself for the same reasons. Think I will begin my search over and look for something charming outside of Plaka altogether. Thanks ekscrunchy.
