budget for Eastern Europe for hotels/ B & B

We are planning on traveling to Eastern Europe in early May 2009. Prague and Budapest will be our main cities. We also want to rent a car and explore the countryside. Our two weeks will be split half city and half smaller towns.

What should we budget for a hotel or B&B? Nothing fancy, just clean and in a safe convenient location.
Farm stays are also an option if available.
Thanks for your help

For our hotel stays earlier this year in Prague and Budapest, we found the prices for 3-star hotels to be similar to those in other large European cities. Prague was, surprising to us, more expensive than Budapest.

In the countryside of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, the prices were, of course, much lower (and lower than corresponding places in other countries). We stayed in the equivalent of 3-star hotels, & needed a 3-person room, as we were traveling with our son. I would say, on average, we spent about $100/night for a 3-person room in the smaller towns in the countryside. You could definitely stay cheaper and still be safe and probably convenient as well.

FYI, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary are actually in Central Europe.

I highly recommend the BudaB&B, run by two Americans who have been living in Budapest for about 8 years. Website is: www.budabab.com/index.htm

Very nice B&B on Pest side, great hosts, very reasonable prices.

We recently rented apartments in Budapest and Prague.
We paid 85E for Budapest apartment and think it was very reasonable:

Prague apartment with excellent breakfast was at 119E for 3 (109 for 2), but owner has cheaper apartments

We stayed at the Residence Belehradska in Praha 2. It was about 116 per night and it was an apartment with all the comforts of home. Was very nice, clean and safe. Website is www.b35.cz

In Mala Strana:

Vlasska Apartments. Safe. Clean. Great area. Little market across the street as well as a wireless internet bar. Owner/Manager Pasquale can arrange pick up at airport and will meet you there. He also gives a little orientation to Prague, which was nice. It ain't the Ritz, but it suited us just fine. It also has a little kitchenette. Pasquale is terrific.

He also has apartments in Old Town and more of a B&B a little further away. E-mail him soon as these places get gobbled up quickly.

So far the most we have ever paid for a B&B in the Czech Republic is 60 euros for a double room (including Prague). I literally do hundreds of hours of research and can find some really great gems. We usually get off the beaten path and wander into the rural areas or farm stays.

Sounds like you will have a wonderful trip - May is such a lovely time to go!

Hello! I suggest you take a look at http://www.coolpragueapartments.com/ where you can find a b&b or apartments for any budget, and whichever accommodation you will pick will come with a free internet connection ;)

Prague TV is a great source for budget accommodation in Prague. The listings have a direct link to the hotel or apartment website, allowing you to book directly from the hotel.
