Budget Accommodations in Barcelona and Madrid

I'm looking for suggestions for a three night stay in Barcelona and two nights in Madrid. I'm travelling with my parents and my child and would ideally like two hotel rooms or an apartment-type with at least one bedroom and a sleeper sofa (my dad is a horrible snorer and I can't sleep in the same room with that!). We need something inexpensive but also clean and safe.

An additional endorsement for MadridMan, there is a very good list of hostals on his website. Clicking on the names will usually direct you to the individual hotel's sites for you to compare. We chose from his list using the Lonely Planet guide as another reference as well. Good luck, you'll have fun!

Hello. I visited both cities in early December. My traveling companion and I stayed in a double at Hostal Opera, which I highly recommend, in Barcelona for 58 Euros per night. We stayed at Hostal Villar in Madrid for 42 Euros per night. These are actual hotels, not hostels, despite the name. Both offered good value, although Opera was nicer than Villar, and both had their own websites which can easily be found on Google. Good luck.

I don't know what your idea of budget is, but I stayed in a two bedroom apartment here:

Our apartment had two bedrooms and a terrace for 125 Euro; but they have other apartments that are cheaper. The location was great too.

Rialto, we stayed at Hostal Madrid this summer and found it very nice as well. We had booked a double room but were upgraded to a 1BR apartment for around 85E. Everything about the hotel is adequate, no food or breakfast available but the location is right in the middle of everything at Plaza del Sol.

Thanks for the responses. It looks like an apartment might be cheaper than two rooms at a hostel. But most have a three night minimum and we're only planning two nights in Madrid. Hmm...???

Ritalo, the 1BR for 85E...does that only sleep two?

Oops that question re: apartment for 85E was for dncee11!

I am pretty sure the Hostal Madrid does not have a minumum - they have a reception office, and hotel rooms, as well. Check with them.
