Budget Accommodation in York and the Cotswolds.

My wife and I are looking for budget accommodation in York. It doesn't matter whether the room is ensuite or not. A private B&B, guest house, hostel or hotel would be fine. We don't mind if the room has seen better days as long as the mattress is comfortable and the room is clean.
Could somone also recommend the name of a small town plus accommodation, in the cotswolds, which could be used as a base.
We will have a car so parking closeby would be necessary.
We would not like to pay any more than $70US per room per day.
Thanks, Richard.

I stayed in a nice little town of Fairford, which is on the SE part of the Cotswolds. I stayed at the RAF base, but I know there was at least one hotel in town and probably b&b's

It made a fine base for exploring the area

We stayed at the four seasons hotel in York and loved it. It is 29L per person per night and includes breakfast. Don't know if this is too much money but the baths are en suite, is rated 4 diamonds by the AA, and has a wonderful breakfast. Can't recommend this B&B highly enough. Wonderful owners.
If you cannot locate B&Bs within your price range there is always another cheap, though characterless alternative and it is one I use myself when travelling in England with a rental car. The have a chain of Travelodge motels around the country which are usually located in the countryside just outside major centres -- there is one about 3 or 4 kms outside York for instance. They have the cirtue of being cheap -- about 35 pounds a night for a couple, they have good sized rooms and very modern bathrooms, and you can, if you are touring as I often am, book the next night or two ahead at another one while staying in one. You can contact Travellodge and they will give you an e-mail address listing the locations and you can do bookings that way. Getting into a place like York is easy -- all of the parking is expensive paid parking with most of the parking on the perimeter of the walls anyway, so you can just drive to one of the lots, park and be on your way inside.

Lanny
