Budget accommodation in Paris needed!

Can anyone recommend a decent budget accommodation in Paris? We were planning to stay in Montmartre but are now apprehensive after reading this forum! I'm hoping now for somewhere in the Latin Quarter...

Thanks!

I would suggest checking the "Let's Go" guide on France for the best, economical lodging options available in each arrondissement. I have used them for lodging tips for years and their recs have been right each time. The last two times I have stayed in the 7th, near the Eiffel Tower, for only 67 euros for a double room. Can't beat that!

That sounds perfect Huitres, do you mind if I ask what the name of the place you stayed was?

Funny... I thought the reviews of Montmartre were fairly "positive", just a warning about Pigalle was all...

Have you tried VRBO for other studios or apartments?

IF you can do without an elevator, and without TV, mini-bar and no air conditioning, I enjoyed the Hotel St. Andre Des Artes,
LOVED the neighborhood and i LOVED the history of the building...

I would recommend Hôtel Residénce Monge in the Latin Quarter. More information at www.hotelmonge.com.

For less money there is the Hôtel Jean Bart near the Luxembourg Gardens. 50 to 60€ per night.

If you do a search on this forum for Hotel Monge you will find quite a few comments on this hotel

You also might do a search on "budget Paris hotels". There is a lot of information on this forum about budget hotels.

Hi bettyanne: The Hotel Kensington is located at 79 avenue de la Bourdonnais (Metro: Ecole Militaire and RER: Pont de L'Alma). It is literally 2 blocks away from the Eiffel Tower and the view at night with the tower lit up is wonderful! It is also within walking distance to the Hotel Des Invalides (Napoleon's tomb) as well as the Musee Rodin (former home of Auguste Rodin, now resplendent with his famous sculptures - closed on Mons). In addition to the 67 euros for a double room/per night, they offer an optional breakfast for 7 euros. There are plenty of boulangeries and pastry shops around, including 2 Monoprix/Franprix supermarches nearby, so you will have a lot of options in terms of food. Nearly all of the friendly hotel staff speak English and are most welcome and cordial.

The hotel's website is: http://www.hotel-kensington.com

In the Latin Quarter, we stay at Hotel la Sorbonne. It's right across from the Sorbonne University and 80 euros double. It's clean, convenient, friendly and very safe. It's also an easy walk to nearly everything and there are three Metro stations and two RER stations nearby . . . easy access from CDG on RER.

Try http://www.France.com for hotel suggestions and reviews. The reviews are from people who have actually stayed at the hotels and they are brutally honest. You can search by arrondissement, type of hotel or price. We've booked through them for years and have never had a problem. There are photos of each hotel too.

I would recommend you post your idea of "budget" I have noticed that some people on this board have a different view of budget then I do (Their idea might be the Ritz!)

I actually stayed in a budget hotel in Montmarte a few years ago and it was not near as bad as this forum might have you belive. Remember if your fellow posters are comparing budget to the Ritz, NOTHING is going to work.

I've stayed at the Hotel de Chevreuse - just north of Blvd Montparnasse. A small, clean hotel (23 rooms). One block to metro (Vavin). Steps to Luxemborg garden and the walk to Notre Dame area is about 20 minutes (or a quicker metro ride). I highly recommend it. Rooms are small but nice and CHEAP. 38 Euros single - 50 Euros double - 70 Euros triple. Four stories and no elevator, ask for a lower flor if this is a problem.

Hotel de Chevreuse
3 rue de Chevreuse 75006

I enjoyed my stay at Gran Hotel Leveque in the 7th. It is on a cobblestone street closed to traffic. 10 min walk to Eiffel Tower. Metro, Post office, bakeries all within 2 blocks from hotel.
They have added an elevator since I last stayed there. Very friendly, helpful staff.

I second taking a look at eurocheapo.com. We found a great inexpensive locanda in Venice through that website.

In Paris, for a budget place, I like the Hotel du Lys in the 6th.

We recently stayed at Hotel du Septieme Art, 75 euros. Far from lovely, but certainly fine, and with an excellent location in the Marais.

For the last five years I have used
www.france-hotel-guide.com/parishotels.htm
You can do a search by location or price range, there is no fee and you book directly with the hotels! A few I like are: Hotel Monge as mentioned above, Hotel Keppler, and Hotel Claude Bernard.

elle, I remember taking a look at the Hotel du Septieme Art a few years ago while looking at a number of different hotels in the Marais. That's the one with the kind of glossy, art-decoesque interior, movie-themed, right?

capo--

yup, that's the one. It's kind of fun. Our room had posters for the Marx Bros "Une Journee a les Courses" (Day at the Races), Burt Lancaster in "Chevalier du Stade," which was apparently the French title for "Man of Iron" (??) or something like that, and a Rita Hayworth movie (It may have been Gilda; all I remember is that she was described as "la vedette atomique&quot.

The rooms are pretty basic and small, a little on the dreary side, and other than the poster and the black-and-white movie tiles in the bathroom, they didn't have much character. We were just looking for a cheap place to sleep and didn't spend much time in the room, so it was fine for a few days.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. There's no elevator. The hotel takes American Express (not every Paris hotel does), plus the location is excellent--on rue St. Paul just off rue St. Antoine.

I'd probably stay there again if I was on a tight budget, like we were this time.

When I want an inexpensive room in Paris I stay in the 7me at the Hôtel de France, near les Invalides and the Place Ecole Militaire. A double room is something like 72 €. Ask for a renovated toom - they did the entire hotel, except for one floor, over a couple of years ago. Friendly staff, nice umbrella stand at the door for free umbrellas if it's raining when you get to the lobby, internet access in the lobby - great place.

Capo, I used to consider Hotel du Lys my favorite budget hotel, also, but it's now my "favorite reasonably priced" hotel. It is 110E for a double, which translated into ~$135 in March.

Last month when checking hotels I did ask Hotel de France specifically for a renovated room. The reply was that "there is no renovated room in particular, all rooms are nice." So I am not certain if one can really be sure that they will be getting one of the renovated rooms. Is it possible that if one is a regular guest then a specific room will be assigned if asked?

There is Hotel St. Thomas d'Aquin in the 7th district but it's next to St. Germain; rates are 129 euros with breakfast. The Hotel St. Christophe has double rooms for less than 100 euros-sometimes with breakfast included depending on the season.

Agree that Hotel Leveque is quite good. We have also used the Grand Hotel Jean d'Arc in the Marais and it is also very good. A chain we have used with good results is Timhotel - they have hotels around the city, some better locations than others. They are pretty decent as well. Our stay at Le Bristol, while nice, was certainly not worth the money when compared to what you get versus the cheaper hotels above. We prefer those small hotels like Leveque any time. Have fun.
