Budapest, Vienna, Prague in late March

So I'm headed to these 3 fine cities w/ a girl friend and would appreciate any info on accomodations and places to see. A big concern of ours is staying in a location close to nightlife. We don't mind taking public transportation during the day, but don't want to hop on the Metro late at night after a couple of cocktails. Anyhow, we're especially confused about Budapest, because of the whole Buda and Pest thing. Help!

They are fine cities. The name of Budapest came from the union of two cities - Buda and Pest. (Actually, there was a third, smaller city, but it't name didn't change things.) Buda was on the west of the Duna (Danube elsewhere) river, and Pest on the east. "Downtown" to most will mean the Pest side, especially district V.

You can easily find many things of interest in each of the cities. Your interests might be a good basis of planning. In each city you can get a 1/2 day sightseeing tour that will give a good overview, then you can go back and explore as interests you. I do suggest using tours with live, multilingual guides rather then tape recordings -- it's hard to ask questions of the tapes.

Where to stay depends a bit on your budget and preferences -- full service hotel or Pensione/B&B, or something in between.

We're past the hostel stage and just want something relatively clean with an English speaking concierge. We're looking to pay about $150/night in Budapest and Prague, slightly more in Vienna.
