Budapest tour questions

Has anyone used the free walking trips in Budapest? I am wondering if a private guide with driver is necessary. And if so, what should I expect to pay?
My husband and I are active experienced travelers in our 70s

You can visit Budapest very easily on your own. No guide or tour is necessary unless that is your preference, and that would be true even if you weren't experienced travelers!

Budapest is lovely - enjoy!

We've done both the free walking tour of the Jewish Quarter and the Free general tour, both of which we thought were very good. The General Tour starts on the Pest side where it spends most of the time then crosses the Chain Bridge and gives people the option of walking or taking the funicular up to the Castle District.

The tour of the Jewish Quarter goes into the grounds of the Great Synagogue but not inside. We did the short, for cost, tour of it first, then the walking tour. An additional bonus of this tour is that it ends up inside one of the Ruin Pubs where you can buy a drink.

Both tours are very informative and the guides seemed very enthusiastic about showing visitors their city. IIRC we tipped the equivalent of $10.00 pp.

We did several tours with http://www.triptobudapest.hu/

Andres is a GREAT guide, as are the others, but he in particular was knowledgeable and enthusiastic and fun.

I highly recommend the "free" Budapest Walking tours: http://www.triptobudapest.hu

We did three tours with them; all were excellent, but we especially enjoyed the Communist tour. If you are very lucky, Anna will be your guide and share family stories and insights into life under communism and afterwards.

We subsequently learned that we could book directly with her via:

We are looking forward to an Art Nouveau tour on our next visit.

Endres! That is who I meant; gret guide. We met Anna too, she was training with him last
November.
