But how much would one normally save on that short trip with discounted and severely restricted tickets vs waiting till there and seeing which train you really want to take?

I wound up in first class last time because it was cheaper than second class by the time I got around to buying my ticket.>

One good reason to at least look at advance tickets -this is not unusual -go in first class cheaper than a full-fare 2nd class ticket and there is a significant difference IME between the classes - especially for those traveling with too much luggage- easier to find room for them.
