Budapest to Vienna
Has anyone traveled from Budapest to Vienna by train? More or less how long does it take? Do you need a reservation or do the trains not fill up too quickly? And finally does anyone know how far it is from the train station in Vienna where it pulls in--to the airport?

Yes, I use that line perhaps once each two years.

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetable. Tables 1250 and 3 have your trains. The journey from one station (Keleti) is three hours, and from another (Deli) is 2 hours 40 minutes. You need a reservation for Friday afternoons and evenings in summer, only. The traun pulls in to Vienna West station. From there a bus runs every 20 or 30 minutes to the airport, 17 kilometers away.

Please write if I can help further.

Ben Haines, London
We just rode from Budapest to Vienna in May. We had no trouble buying tickets at the station for we knew by using the RailEurope internet site the times that the trains left. The journey was a little over three hours long and it was a very comfortable and not to expensive even in first class.

I hope you're not planning to take the train back to the airport.
I made the mistake of trying to take the train to the Vienna airport in May. They were doing track work and had delays (which were not posted!) and you had to take the subway to an outlying station, then walk with your luggage for about 1k. Again, no signs or instructions posted anywhere. I would have had no idea what to do had I not seen someone else with luggage and decided to follow him to what turned out to be a tiny train station near a cemetery. I gave the ticket agents a piece of my mind and they were apologetic about the lack of instructions and assistance. But the trip took me almost 1.5 hours (from downtown Vienna!!) and I missed my flight. Fortunately, the Austrian Airlines people were very sympathetic and booked me onto a Sabena flight. It was a holiday week-end and flights were VERY full--I had to wait at the airport almost 5 hours to get a flight.
At any rate, that's the last time I'll take the train BACK to the airport when I have a schedule to keep. The Austrian Airlines people said the airport train is not reliable and that the buses were better, or better still, take a taxi.
BTilke

No problem with the trains from Keleti to Vienna West train station (about 3 hours) Although do go 1st class, it is definitely worth the extra $. And, yes when you get into the train station there is a bus to the airport every 20 mins or so.
