Budapest to Pecs as a day trip?

Would anyone recomend this daytrip? And, if so, upon arrival at the Pecs rail station, where to go and what to do for a few hours?

Cheers

I have never been there so can't recommend anything. But am also going to Budapest soon, and like you, have been considering side trips. One thing you may want to consider is travel time to/from Pecs. If you haven't already seen these, here are some train and bus links:

It looks like it may be better as an overnight but at least do-able as a daytrip if you get one of the faster trains.

The train is 3 hours each way. If that qualifies as a day trip for you ... then do it as Pecs is well worth seeing.

On the other hand it is a perfect "overnight" trip -- preferrably 2 nights so you can see some of the surrounding area, such as Siklos and Villany. [castle & wine cellars!!]

I've always been picked up at the train station. It is probably about a 20 minute walk to the center, although I am not sure. Taxis are easily available both at the station and at the main square and, unlike Budapest, are honest.

In the center you will see the walking street with the National Theatre and stores to buy Hungarian porcelain, especially Zsolnay, which is made in Pecs [the factory store doesn't have better prices or selection], the main square with the former mosque and the Zsolnay tile roofs on several buildings -- not to mention a superior McDonalds!

Just a short walk from the main square [through a lovely park] is the Pecs cathedral and what remains of the medieval bastion. The Csontvarfy Museum is in the center and worth it, as is the old Synagogue.

If you have more time you can take a city bus up to the TV tower for a view of the area. Pecs is in the Mecek Hills -- so there is much good hiking available for a longer stay.

I LOVE Pecs

Hi,

Pecs is one of the most beautiful cities in Hungary. i live quite far away and we visit it every year as it is so relaxing a real meditarrenien city (ok without the sea).
There is a lot to see. go to www.pecs.hu and there is an English page.
Lot of great museums (vasarely, mining etc) I would definately make it a 2 day trip and go to the TV tower it is really nice to look out( apart from one side as there is a mine ther.
From Budapest use Intercity train appr. 1 Euro extra cost, but a nice, fast train.

Any questions, let me know.
