Budapest to Munich--trains, planes, automobiles?

We're inclined to do a train, this will be in April, what do you suggest? Not sure how long it will take to get there, should we plan to stay somewhere along the way or can we get to Munich in a reasonable time?

Incidentally, I've been on the rail europe site and not having any luck finding a train that goes between these two cities...even when I try to break it up into small segments. What am I doing wrong? Would like to at least see how long it would take. Thanks for your help.

You will find the connections at
http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

There is one direct EuroCity train leaving Budapest at 13.10, arriving in Munich at 20.34.
And one overnight: leave Bud 20.20, arr Muc 6.15.

The other connections involve 2-3 transfers at various places.

This is a belated thank you for this information Cowboy...just what I was looking for!
How far ahead do you recommend we make reservations?

The earliest you can make reservations is 90 days in advance.

You don't need any reservations, certainly not further ahead than a day or two. You have to find time to buy a ticket somewhen before boarding. Buying in Budapest will be probably cheaper, as it gets you "domestic" tarifs.

If you travel 2nd class during a busy time (friday afternoon, or around holidays), a seat reservation a few days in advance wouldn't hurt.
