buca di baca or il san pietro?

am going to positano and have heard that hotel il san pietro is absolutely fabulous, but out of the way and difficult to get to and from. Hotel buca di baco, on the other hand, I got from Karen Brown and heard that it was much more accessible. Can anyone vouch for one over the other? thanks!

San Pietro is up on a hill and a short distance from the town of Positano. It is a Relais and Chateau property and reportedly one of the most beautiful in that chain. The price of all that luxury is high, probably starting at $400 US and going up from there.

Buca de Bacco sits right on the beach in the middle of Positano. It looks nice enough and has lots of supporters on this site. It's price is probably half or less than that of San Pietro.

We favor the Covo dei Saraceni, also on the beach but facing a different direction than Buca di Bacco and in a price range probably between the two and closer to Buca di Bacco.

We stayed at the Buca di Bacco a couple of years ago. Perfect position, right by the beach. The rooms were on the small side (well, ours was!) but the service was friendly, there was a nice quiet terrace to sit and read; breakfast was served on another terrace with amazing views and, last but not least, the hotel restaurant was great

Il San Pietro is about a mile from the rest of Positano. The SITA bus stops right in front, though I doubt that many who stay there actually use the bus. I believe they have a car to transport their guests where they want to go, though I don't know if there's a charge for that. We couldn't afford to stay there, so we had lunch there. Unforgettable! As we walked from the parking lot to the elevator to take us down through the cliff, all I could say was, "Oh, my." If I had the money, there would be no question as to where I would stay. I'm sure Buca di Bacco is very nice, but my understanding is that very few of the rooms have good views.

The San Pietro is indeed a gorgeous hotel, with prices to match. They do have a free car service, which when we were there a few years ago, was in a darling sky blue Fiat Jolly 600 from the 1950s. But if you are considering the San Pietro and are worried about convenience and location, why not the Sirenuse? It has a great location in town and is just as elegant, if not more so, than the San Pietro.
