For a local perspective of the topic, go to www.xpats.com (the site for xpats in Belgium) and read the discussion for this week's question--would you recommend Belgium as a holiday destination?
My own view is that for one night, you will enjoy seeing the Grand'Place and having a nice meal. Find a hotel as close to the GP as possible, but for anyone staying slightly longer, one of the nicest private hotels in Brussels has just joined the Hyatt chain. It's located at about the 400 block of the Avenue Louise. Although it's not in a touristy area, it is in the heart of an upscale residential neighborhood, with some pretty parks, excellent, untouristy restaurants, and shopping.
Although I live in Brussels, if I were a tourist and had to choose between a night in Brussels and a night in Brugge, I'd pick Brugge.
BTilke (Brussels)
